New Gmail on the way, sneak peak now available

New GmailWith all the attention being given to Google+ this week, you wouldn’t be faulted for missing out on news about the upcoming facelifts for several of Google’s established products. Today we learned that Google’s e-mail service Gmail is going be included in the redesigns. In a blog post on Thursday, Google alerted the public of the impending upgrades.

“This is part of a Google-wide effort to bring you an experience that’s more focused, elastic, and effortless across all of our products,” said Jason Cornwell, a Google user experience designer, in a blog post. “The changes are not going to happen all at once. We know that you love and care about Gmail as much as we do, and we’ll be working on these upgrades gradually over the next few months to allow plenty of time to understand and incorporate your feedback into the evolving design.”

While Google didn’t tip its hand with regard to the new Gmail features, it did provide instructions on how to access a sneak preview of the new Gmail layout. Curious Gmail users can access their account’s “Mail Settings” and then click on the “Themes” tab to find options for “Preview” and “Preview (Dense).” Both of these options give similar insights into where Google is going with the redesign: more focus given to the “Compose” button, a more pronounced mailbox area, and a generally more modern aesthetic.

New Google HomepageGoogle’s redesign effort extends beyond Gmail. If you used Google earlier this week, you may have caught sight of tweaks to Google’s homepage. Google says that it will be redesigning the “look and feel” of many of its products in the coming months.

In May, CNBC discovered that Google tracks your purchase history through a little-known Purchases page that pulls information from Gmail emails like order confirmations. It tracked both physical purchases and online ones, and there is no setting in the Data & Personalization page on Google Account to turn the feature off.

Google claimed that the data could be deleted if users didn't want the company to know everything they bought online. But in practice, deleting purchases was not so easy. Purchases cannot be deleted in bulk, and the only way to remove an item from the Purchases page is to delete the email from your Gmail inbox.

Google tracks many of your online purchases, even if they are bought from a non-Google affiliated store like Amazon, according to a report from CNBC this week -- a troubling example of the way that Google collects data from the services you use without you being aware of it.

Few social media sites are as popular as Reddit. Regardless of what you're interested in, there's probably a thriving community for you to interact with on the platform. Known as subreddits, these communities are home to topics like gaming, world news, science, movies, and more. If you can't find a subreddit with your particular interest, Reddit makes it easy to create your own Reddit community.

Running a successful Reddit community isn't easy – but the process of starting one only takes a few minutes. Keep in mind that you'll want to keep a close eye on your subreddit to prevent it from being shut down or turning into a wasteland with no users, but running a subreddit can be a lot of fun when done properly. If you prefer, you can also create a private community that only your friends can join, giving you a place to hang out beyond Twitter and TikTok.
