Volvo LifePaint is an invisible spray that makes cyclists visible to drivers at night

VOLVO LIFEPAINT
When you ride your bicycle at night without appropriate reflective accessories, you’re essentially invisible to drivers, which can lead to all sorts of hazards. Volvo has created a temporary spray that makes bicyclists visible when in the line of car headlights during those perilous nighttime hours.

Volvo LifePaint is a transparent reflective spray that makes cyclists visible at night, when exposed to car headlights. It’s invisible during the day, lasts for about 10 days on whatever material it’s sprayed on, and can be washed off.

“Though designed for safer cycling, LifePaint can be applied to any fabric  —  clothes, shoes, pushchairs, children’s backpacks  —  even dog leads and collars,” according to a Medium post written by Grey London, a U.K.-based creative agency that worked with Volvo and Swedish startup Albedo100 to introduce LifePaint.

LifePaint will be put through trials at six London and Kent-based bicycle shops. If this first phase of the project is successful, it will be expanded to more of the U.K. and the world.

As part of testing, Grey London has created “invisible” black posters sprayed with LifePaint, which reveal messages when exposed to a smartphone’s flashlight.

“Every year more than 19,000 cyclists are injured on the U.K.’s roads,” said Nick Connor, managing director at Volvo Car U.K. “At Volvo, we believe that the best way to survive a crash is not to crash, and are committed to making the roads a safer place by reducing the number of accidents.”

The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
