A new study by Horowitz Associates shows that large numbers of young adults (18-34) have used mobile devices and the Internet to watch TV online and some are considering abandoning their cable or satellite TV service for the web. The study asked more than 800 broadband users if they watched TV in alternative ways and found that 7 percent of users are considering canceling their cable or satellite subscriptions, and 19 percent more would consider it if more of their favorite shows were available online. Roughly 22 percent of broadband-using adults could abandon pay TV in favor of the web.
25 percent of broadband Internet users watch TV online or on handheld devices daily, according to the study. Among 18-34 year-olds, the number rises to 37 percent; among 15-17 year-olds, 44 percent watch TV online or on devices almost daily. 39 percent of adults watch TV online or on devices weekly. Overall, 78 percent of all broadband users have watched TV online or on devices.
“The data clearly show that when it comes to the next generation of multichannel customers, we should be concerned about the ongoing and future value of the video/pay-TV elements of our service offerings, and the strategies in place to deal with it,” notes Howard Horowitz, President of Horowitz Associates. “The penetration and usage of alternative viewing technology is reaching a tipping point, and the measurable impact on how the TV product is viewed will inevitably follow.”
Today alone, Hulu brought its Hulu Plus subscription out of beta and Vudu was announced for PS3. Still, it isn’t all rosy. Though everyone does a bit of TV viewing elsewhere, only about 3 percent of total viewing is done online or on alternate platforms. The majority of people still prefer to watch TV, well, on a television. Perhaps good news for Google TV and other TV-based Internet platforms.

Canceled it 3 years ago…… Kids still bugs about it….
With sevices like netflix and even online stff you don’t need tv anymore. We canceled and I don’t miss it one bit. Most tv is crap anywho.
@Stephan – Did you goto school with anyone who only got antenna signal tv stations? They were slightly laughed at when I was in school because everyone had MTV. It was a big deal when my family got UHF so I could FINALLY watch The Simpsons and know what everyone was talking about. Ah, the old days.
@Joe: Actually had a friend who did not have but not in same school. On the flip side he had the coolest and most recent toys….
I agree that most stuff on TV is crap but the real problem here was mostly commercials. When your kids start telling you what store has what and that we need this and that for whatever reason. You can control what the kids watch but its what happens during the breaks that may affect them even more.
We get all of our shows commercial free now and the show are not even 40 minutes most times. This means 20 Minutes or more is commercials.
We have the Satellite dish only because the Broadband Internet is not available without.

Havn’t had cable tv in several years.. don’t need it, don’t miss it..
The company that owns my apartment, Mid America Apartment Communities, has forced all residents to buy cable service from Comcast. That's right: I am now required to fork over $40 a month to Comcast as a requirement for staying in my apartment. And get this: they call it a "Cable-Saver" program because the cable is being offered at a discounted rate. But for someone like me, who watches EVERYTHING on Netflix or Hulu, it's just massive corporate welfare. Taking from the little guys and subsidizing Comcast.
I don't even pay for the sites that offer the episodes of various shows. You can find so many free sites and watch the episode with the 6 hour delay. With a little effort you can find almost anything for free
Cable and Satellite is to much money. They nickel and dime you for everything. They make you rent their equipment and lock you into shady deals and gimmicks. Prices only go up on Cable and nothing is for free. I cut the cord about 2 years ago. I only pay 8.99 a month for Netflix streaming and it goes right to my TV with the Wii . I don't have to rent any equipment. I am very happy and have saved so much money it isn't even funny.
This article does not surprise me one bit. The internet has allowed young adults, basically college students and post-grads, to watch there favorite shows on the their computers. Rather paying two bills its cheaper to just the pay the Internet bill because everyone need the Web and you can still watch your shows via YouTube, Hulu, CastTV, or any channel sites.
ur dumb dude.
