Cortana is finally coming to Xbox One in its Summer Update

As Microsoft continues its effort to make its products and services ecosystem more consistent, it is finally bringing Cortana, the virtual assistant featured on Windows 10, to the Xbox One. After multiple delays starting in 2015, the feature is part of the Xbox Summer Update, which began rolling out to users today.

While we previously reported it would initially launch on Xbox One in the United States, the United Kingdom, Frame, Italy, Germany, and Spain, it is only currently rolling out to the United States and the United Kingdom.

A release from Xbox says that with Cortana gamers can expect more from voice commands on Xbox. The feature will replace and improve upon the current voice recognition software in the console: “In addition to more commands and greater accuracy with natural language and text direction, Cortana provides the ability to use a headset or Kinect,” the release says. “You’ll be able to use Cortana to find new great games, see what your friends are up top, start a party, accomplish common tasks, turn on your Xbox One if you’re using Kinect, and more.”

Microsoft will also continue rolling out more Cortana features into the system over time, as part of its vision to “have Cortana be your personal digital assistant for gaming,” according to the release.

While the move largely represents closer integration of the Xbox One and Windows 10 user experiences, the Summer Update as a whole will prove useful to Xbox One users in more than one way. The update adds a background music feature allowing users to play music while they play games or use other apps on the console, with apps like Pandora. Groove Music, iHeartRadio, and other apps are coming later. You’ll also be able to better sort and manage your Game Collection, and set your language independently of where you are located.

Larian Studios confirmed that the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate 3 will still be coming out this year by announcing its December release window.

"Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release," Larian Studios stated on X (formerly Twitter). There's no specific release date yet, but Larian's tweet reveals when we'll learn more. "We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere of the exact release date," the developer teased. Geoff Keighley's video game award show takes place every December and is always full of announcements in addition to awards. The show is shaping up to be a big one for Baldur's Gate 3, as it's nominated in nine categories -- including Game of the Year and Best RPG -- and will have its December release date revealed there.

Microsoft is testing out a new "Compact Mode" for its Xbox app on Windows 11. The mode is currently available to Xbox Insiders, and it shrinks the sidebar in the Xbox app to provide a clearer view into the main window.

It's not a big deal on its own, but it's clearly a move by Microsoft to make Windows 11 easier to use on devices like the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. It's a step in the right direction, but we need more radical changes to the Xbox app if Microsoft has any hope of making it a destination for not only Xbox Game Pass, but handheld PC gaming devices.

One of the year’s best reviewed games is coming to Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft revealed the next batch of games coming to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service this October. While no Activision Blizzard games are coming to the service just yet following that acquisition, one of 2023's best-reviewed games is: this year's Dead Space remake.

Dead Space came out in January and is a stunning remake of a 2008 horror classic. The game follows an engineer named Issac Clarke as he searches for his girlfriend Nicole on a gigantic spaceship called the USG Ishimura. It's overrun by disgusting creatures called Necromorphs, though, leading to plenty of horrific situations as Issacs looks for answers on the ship. The original was an atmospheric and tense horror game, and developer EA Motive only enhanced all of that with this remake that updates the game's visuals and makes some other tweaks to bring the experience more in line with future games in its series and other modern horror games.
It's a great choice if you're looking for a new horror game to play this month, so we recommend checking it out when it hits Xbox Game Pass on October 26. It's not the only game coming to the service during the back half of this month, though. Here's the full list of games coming to Xbox Game Pass throughout the rest of October.
