Like herding cats: 'Yakuza 6' adds open-world cat cafes, busking, and more

Ryu Ga Gotoku/Yakuza 6 TGS 2016 Trailer
Sega outlined many of the outrageous side activities featured in its upcoming open-world adventure game Yakuza 6, revealing that players can divide their time between investigating the criminal underworld and managing a virtual cat cafe.

The latest entry in Sega’s long-running Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan series, Yakuza 6 will bring its unique charms to Japanese audiences later this year for the PlayStation 4.

Tracing its origins back to the PlayStation 2 era, the Yakuza series has drawn frequent comparisons to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise. Backed by a gritty storyline that focuses on warring crime syndicates, the Yakuza games deliver a series of brutal third-person brawls bridged by open-world exploration sequences.

Gamers looking for a break from the action have plenty of options, however, as the Yakuza games are known for their over-the-top sidequests and minigames. Series producer Toshihiro Nagoshi gave fans an early glimpse at Yakuza 6‘s featured side missions during Tokyo Game Show this week, revealing that cat cafe management plays a surprise role in the game’s dramatic narrative.

While wandering the mean streets of Japan as series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, players will encounter stray cats in need of rescue. After rounding up several strays, players will be given the option to put their adopted feline friends to work at a cat cafe, which generates in-game currency on a regular basis.

Cat cafe management is one of several optional activities players can enjoy in Yakuza 6. Other featured minigames include busking, darts, batting cages, mahjong, and pachinko. During downtime between missions, players can also attempt to find Kiryu a soulmate by befriending bar hostesses and seducing virtual webcam girls via skilled typing.

Arcade fanatics will also find a lot to like in Yakuza 6, as the game includes fully functional arcade versions of Sega’s one-on-one fighting game Virtua Fighter 5 and competitive puzzler Puyo Puyo. Both games offer head-to-head multiplayer modes, allowing Yakuza fans to take on their friends in local matches.

Yakuza 6 will debut for the PlayStation 4 in Japan on December 8. While a North American release date is not yet known, series prequel Yakuza 0 is scheduled for a stateside launch on January 24.

Hades 2: release date prediction, trailers, gameplay, and more
Melinoe standing in a stone circle.

Just like Zagreus' never-ending quest to escape the Underworld in Greek mythology, it seems we too are destined to continue fighting through new levels of demons and monsters in the sequel to the amazing roguelike Hades. We're not complaining, as that game was one of the best games released in 2020, and no one expected a sequel at all, let alone one announced so soon. Hades 2 will be the first sequel studio Supergiant Games have ever made, and it makes sense given how successful and popular the first game ended up being. Aside from some notable exceptions like Rogue Legacy 2 and Spelunky 2, not many roguelikes ever get a direct sequel, so there's a lot of mystery surrounding how Hades 2 will be different from the first game. But there's no need to dive into the depths of the Underworld yourself in search of answers, as we've pulled all the information we could from the jaws of Cerberus.
Release date

Hades 2 entered early access on May 6, 2024.

Manor Lords performance guide: best settings, recommended specs, and more
Running around a Manor Lords village in third-person.

Manor Lords is the most wish-listed game on Steam at the time of this writing, and from my early impressions, it's an excellent medieval village management simulator. It's like Banished, but taken up a notch. But as impressive and fun as it is already, it's still an Early Access game, which means getting it to run at its best requires a little finesse with the settings.

But you don't need to spend hours painstakingly adjusting your seeings and benchmarking the game, because we've done that for you! After our rigorous testing, we've found the best settings for Manor Lords to give you peak performance so you can enjoy the grubby details of this dark ages setting.
The best settings for Manor Lords
Manor Lords is an immersive single-player experience, so while our settings recommendations are designed to improve performance beyond just setting everything to the maximum or leaving them at defaults, we aren't going to make major sacrifices to visual quality just for a few frames per second (fps).
