Update: Added information on Hitman’s free first episode, available now on consoles and PC.

A few weeks ago, publisher Square Enix announced that it planned to sell or shutter Hitman developer IO Interactive following the game’s lower-than-expected sales figures, putting the future of the longtime stealth franchise in question. Today, we have some good news to report for fans of the studio and franchise. Not only has IO Interactive regained its independence, but it has taken the rights to the Hitman franchise with it.

“Our passion and determination has never been greater and so that is why we have decided it is not the time to stop as we have many more exciting and original tales to tell,” said CEO Hakan Abrak. “Therefore I am proud to announce today that IOI is now officially an independent studio. We have successfully concluded our negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout. Crucially, we will keep all of the rights to the Hitman IP.”

IO Interactive owns the rights to the franchise, so it could feasibly choose to self-publish the second season of Hitman at a later date, but Abrak added that the studio is “open to opportunities with future collaborators and partners.” It’s unclear if IO plans to rehire any of the employees it was forced to let go in May, or if Hitman will be scaled down as a result of the buyout.

For stealth-action fans, it’s especially important to hear about Hitman‘s second lease on life, as the other major espionage franchise, Splinter Cell, sounds like it’s at least a couple of years away, and Metal Gear has gone completely off the rails with a zombie-focused spinoff.

If you haven’t given Hitman a try yet, the game’s first location, the ICA Facility, is available for free on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It contains two story missions as well as their cinematics, challenges, “Escalation” contracts, achievements, and even user-created content. Any progress and achievements or trophies you earn will be carried over into the full game, should you choose to purchase it, and a hefty discount has been applied to the “full season” for the next week.

Last year, IO told Tech Crunch that Hitman was “a success,” and it continued to receive substantial content updates. These added everything from new objectives to the opportunity to murder Gary Busey in cold blood. We can guarantee there is no other game that allows you to do that. The game has continued to receive other “elusive targets” since then, and a MacOS version is even scheduled to arrive next week.

The first season of Hitman is now available as a physical disc for $50 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and as a digital download on both consoles and PC. The disc includes three bonus mission packs, a “making of” documentary, extra items, and the game’s soundtrack.

Nintendo Switch loses an exclusive Square Enix game next month
A duel in the Wild West section of Live A Live.

Square Enix's beautiful HD-2D remake of Live A Live will no longer be a Nintendo Switch exclusive starting next month. The game comes out on PlayStation consoles and PCs on April 27.
Live A Live is a unique grid-based RPG with a fun narrative gimmick. Its story is split up into eight different sections set across eight different sections: Prehistory, The Middle Ages, Imperial China, Twilight of Edo Japan, The Wild West, Present Day, The Near Future, and The Distant Future. Each comes with its own protagonist and gameplay gimmicks before they all crescendo together in a final chapter.

On top of that, this remake of a 1994 SNES game also gives the experience an extreme visual facelift with the HD-2D visuals that make games like Octopath Traveler 2 shine. Digital Trends found the game charming, with George Yang saying Live A Live "has the hallmarks that make it a good entry in the genre" in his three-and-a-half star review of the title.
In North America, Nintendo published the Switch version of Live A Live. Now that the game is coming to other platforms, though, Square Enix has taken back over. To promote the upcoming release, Square Enix has released a demo for Live A Live on PS4 and PS5 today, which lets players try some of the Twilight of Edo Japan, The Distant Future, and The Wild West sections of the game.
Live a Live is available now for Nintendo Switch and will be released for PC, PS4, and PS5 on April 27. PlayStation Plus members can currently preorder the game for a 20% discount as well.

The Hitman trilogy is turning into one $70 collection this month
Agent 47 in Hitman 3.

Io Interactive is making a major change to how Hitman players access the series' most recent trilogy. On January 26, Hitman 3 will turn into Hitman: World of Assassination, a $70 collection featuring Hitman, Hitman 2, and Hitman 3.

The shift likely won't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who's been following the Hitman franchise over the past few years. Since the launch of Hitman 3 in 2021, Io has moved to create parity between all three games in the trilogy, uniting them under the World of Assassination banner. Now the developer is going one step further by turning all three games into a single listing.

Square Enix Symbiogenesis NFT project disappoints Parasite Eve fans
Logo for Symbiogenesis, an NFT art project by Square Enix.

Square Enix finally revealed Symbiogenesis, a project fans discovered the company filed a trademark for last week. While people speculated that this name would apply to a new Parasite Eve project, fans of that series were disappointed to find out that it's not a new Parasite Eve game, but rather an NFT project.

When Square Enix filed for the Symbiogenesis trademark last week, fans believed that it was related to Parasite Eve despite the trademark not mentioning the game at all. Parasite Eve is a horror RPG series rooted in science and genetics, but it hasn't gotten a new game since The 3rd Birthday in 2010. The term symbiogenesis refers to a scientific theory that involves two organisms combining into a single entity that then continues to grow and evolve with the combined attributes of the original organisms. As this theory is part of the foundation for the original Parasite Eve book the series is based on, it's easy to understand why fans thought there could potentially be a connection.
