Here’s the full list of winners from the 2020 Game Awards

The 2020 Game Awards are sure to be a major topic of conversation around the gaming world this year. Between game reveals, announcements, and special guests, the Oscars-style spectacle should keep people talking for days.

The Last of Us Part II largely cleaned up at this year’s ceremony, taking home seven awards including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction. No game came close to picking up as many awards, with Game of the Year nominee Doom Eternal getting shutout entirely. Final Fantasy VII Remake picked up two awards for Best Score and Best RPG, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons won Best Family game.

Indie games made an impact in a few categories, with Hades picking up wins for Best Indie and Best Action game. Meanwhile, 2018 game Among Us landed some major wins, nabbing Best Multiplayer and Best Mobile. Indie horror hit Phasmophobia took home an award for Best Debut.

Microsoft just released the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, and it contained lots of crucial details on the future of Xbox. Microsoft addressed everything from how many games it will make multiplatform to the arrival of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Game Pass to future Xbox hardware.

Four Xbox games are going multiplatform
To kick things off, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, addressed the multiplatform Xbox game rumors. "We made the decision that we’re going to take four games to the other consoles. Just four games, not a change to our kind of fundamental exclusive strategy,” he said. “We’re making these decisions for some specific reasons. We make every decision with the long-term health of Xbox in mind, and long-term health of Xbox means a growing platform, our games performing, building the best platform for creators, reaching as many players as we can."

Layoffs have unfortunately become a nearly nonstop occurrence in the video game industry over the past year. In 2023, over 10,000 workers at game studios lost their jobs, according to data from Game Industry Layoffs. In January 2024 alone, Kotaku reports that over 6,000 developers have already been laid off.

Layoffs at Microsoft hit particularly hard for players, as nearly 2,000 Microsoft developers were let go after years of optimistic promises from Xbox leadership over the Activision Blizzard acquisition, and a survival game project was canceled. While that's been the biggest wave so far this year, we've seen plenty of other companies cutting staff, from Riot Games to Eidos.

At the end of every year, there's one article I always look forward to writing. I try to put the "Trends" in Digital Trends" by predicting where gaming is headed in the coming year. It's a fun thought experiment that puts my expertise to the test as I try to pull together narratives and pin down what the industry is building to. Sometimes I'm spot-on. Other times, I'm hilariously off.

As I began to think about this year's edition, I decided to look back to what I'd written almost exactly one year ago on New Year's Day 2023.  Some of my predictions were right on the money, but others were more sobering. I expected some major growth moments and devastating layoffs occurred instead. Some of those were hard to see coming -- especially in the bizarre case of the Embracer Group. Still, my reflection on what I was expecting reminded me of what a tough industry games can be even when its pumping out historic titles. This year, I'm peeling back the curtain to talk about what I got right and wrong about a tumultuous 2023.
