When Will Fox Finally Release Avatar on 3D Blu-ray?

The Blu-ray version of the movie Avatar was released on April 22 to record sales, and an “ultimate edition” is due in November, but many are left wondering when they will be able to sit in their homes and visit Pandora in 3D, as Cameron intended. No one seems to know for sure.

Cameron had originally told the LA Times that he expected a 3D version of the movie to be sold in November of 2010, but Fox studios executives quickly corrected him and claimed that the November release would feature six minutes of additional footage, as well as a disc full of extra features. Fans hoping for the 3D version will have to wait – at least until Fox is tired of milking the movie for all its worth.

Along with the “ultimate edition” due out in November, the movie will be rereleased theatrically in August with the additional six minutes of footage. The future DVD will contain those missing minutes, but no word yet on if there will be a Blu-ray “ultimate edition” as well.

As to when the 3D version is due out, no one seems to be exactly sure. The website Digital Bits seems to think it could be years before the release, until Fox is convinced that 3D TVs have saturated the market enough, while others suggest some time in the first quarter of next year.

The whole debacle seems somewhat ironic, when you consider that one of the main themes of the movie was the evil that comes from exploiting a resource.

Prime Video lost a handful of movies at the end of April, and Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza is only sticking around through the end of the weekend. But everything else on our list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now is still available. Just keep reading, and you can make plans to watch any of the films that you want to see this month.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)
Jenna Ortega in Miller's Girl.

It should come as no surprise that this year's hit rom-com Anyone But You has a stranglehold on the top slot of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. But it is somewhat surprising to see Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver completely disappear from the list. That's going to make Rebel Moon – Part Three very unlikely to happen, and it may even discourage Netflix from committing extremely high budgets to its original sci-fi movies.

More tellingly, two of this week's new additions are modestly budget dramas: Miller's Girl and The Judge. The former features Wednesday's Jenna Ortega, while the latter has great lead performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. So it's not a mystery as to why both of those films are two of the top performers of the week.
