Resident Evil creator to develop games for ZeniMax

The developer that brought us Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and the recent Vanquish will soon be receiving his paychecks from ZeniMax Media, the company that owns Bethesda Softworks, Arkane Studios, and id Software.

This might not seem like a big deal, but Mikami is one of the most respected developers in the industry, and ZeniMax– who’s most recent game was Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas– can increase their scope and move to a more global footing.

ZeniMax’s upcoming games, which include some huge titles like Doom 4, Brink, and RAGE, are all being developed in North America, while the recently acquired Arkane Studios is based in France. The acquisition of Tango Gameworks increases the company’s worldwide range and gives it a new foothold into the Japanese market, where its games have met with mixed success.

ZeniMax is quietly positioning itself to become one of the truly elite publishers in the world, and the acquisition of Tango Gameworks will further that claim. If you are a fan of games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Doom, then the news that ZeniMax’s reach is increasing is nothing but a good thing.

No word yet on Mikami’s plans, but Tango Gameworks will remain in Japan, and will likely begin to develop a new property for ZeniMax soon.

From Splatterhouse to Resident Evil, horror games found the fun in fear
Resident Evil Village House Beneviento doll.

Horror is one of the most popular gaming genres out there today. Scary games are an especially big hit with the streaming generation, who love to watch their favorite content creators freak out. However, we wouldn't have those countless jump scare reaction videos featuring the Resident Evil 2 remake's Mr. X without years of fear-filled trial and error. Throughout the past few decades, there have been many trendsetters that built upon innovators of the past. That trend continues even now with games like Resident Evil 7, with its clear P.T. inspiration.

And it all started back in the 1970s.
Come on up to the house
The world of video game horror spans many different subgenres birthed throughout the years. Many see the 1972 title Haunted House for the Magnavox Odyssey as the earliest fear-filled gaming experience -- if you even consider a screen overlay a horror game. There were other very early attempts at the genre throughout the '70s and early '80s including various text-based games, pixel-filled movie adaptations for the Atari and NES like Friday the 13th and Halloween, and of course, legendary IPs like Castlevania and Ghosts ‘n Goblins. But no game perfectly translated the feeling of a horror movie to the virtual playground until Splatterhouse.

Of course, it could always slip into next year as well.

How to get to Monkey Island in Sea of Thieves
An election poster for guybrush in Sea of Thieves.

Over the course of its many years of updates and expansions, Sea of Thieves has had a few notable crossovers with other pirate franchises. The Pirates of the Caribbean crossover let you team up with the legendary Jack Sparrow, but the Monkey Island content felt like it came out of nowhere. For those unaware, Monkey Island is a series of pirate point-and-click games that were as funny as the puzzles were obscure. Thankfully, you don't have to intuit that you need to combine a cat whisker with a mason jar to bypass a skeleton guard to get to this new content, but it is more challenging than you might think.
