Will the Switch 2 be backwards compatible?

Now that we’re at the end of the Switch’s lifecycle and there are almost no more upcoming Switch games to speak of, we’ve all amassed a huge library of the best Switch games. Almost every major Nintendo franchise has appeared on this console, from Zelda and Mario to Animal Crossing and Metroid. Now, Nintendo is finally ready to move on and give us the long-awaited Switch 2. This new console has the same winning formula of being a handheld and home console hybrid but with far more power under the hood. That will lead to even better games going forward, but will we need to hold onto our current Switches if we want to play anything we missed in the current library? If the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, you can safely sell or give away your old Switch and make a clean upgrade. Let’s see what the official word is now that we know the facts about this console.

Is the Switch 2 backwards compatible?

Yes! Thankfully, Nintendo isn’t forcing us to rebuild our entire game collection from scratch once again. Almost all of your existing Switch cartridges and digital games can be played on the Switch 2. As long as you sign in with your same Nintendo account, you can access your digital library and download your games onto the new system, while physical game cards can simply be inserted as normal. That said, they will not receive any of the benefits of the new hardware. If you want to enhance your Switch games on the Switch 2, you will need the Switch 2 Edition.

What we do know, thanks to reading some fine print detailing the new Virtual Game Cards, is that “Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system.” This has led to a lot of speculation regarding what exactly a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” game is. It is possible that this means that already owned Switch games can be upgraded to Switch 2 versions, similar to how some games got free PS4 to PS5 upgrades, or that Nintendo will sell new versions of Switch games for Switch 2 with some enhancements.

In either case, it does give hope that, one way or another, Switch games will get some benefit from running on the Switch 2 and not just be straight ports with no improvements.

What are Switch 2 Editions?

While you can still pop in your Switch cartridge or download your owned games and play them on your Switch 2, you won’t see any improvements just for loading it onto the new hardware. Switch 2 Editions can either be purchased physically or digitally as a new purchase or upgraded if you own a copy of an eligible game. Only Switch 2 Edition games will see improvements like upgraded visuals, improved frame rates, HDR support, and even new features and content depending on the game. The current list of all Switch games getting Switch 2 Editions are:

  • Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Civilization 7
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
  • Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar
  • Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma
  • Shadow Labyrinth
  • Tamogotchi Plaza

Razer made a Cinnamoroll headset, and it is aggressively adorable
Razer launches a Cinnamoroll Edition Kraken Kitty V2 BT headset
Razer Kraken Kitty V2 BT Cinnamonroll themed gaming headphones

Razer’s Sanrio collaboration has already produced a full desk setup, and the final drop is now here. The company has launched the Razer Kraken Kitty V2 BT Cinnamoroll Edition, a wireless headset themed around one of Sanrio’s most recognizable characters.

Cinnamoroll is a white puppy from Sanrio, the Japanese company behind Hello Kitty and several other globally recognized character brands. He is known for his long floppy ears, blue eyes, curly tail, and soft cloud-like look. As per the Sanrio lore, he was born high above the clouds and can fly by flapping his big ears. Razer has leaned heavily into that identity for this headset, replacing the usual kitty look with Cinnamoroll’s floppy ears and a sky-blue color scheme.

This AMD mini PC beats Valve’s Steam Machine, but it costs a lot more
SteamOS on this AMD mini PC delivers higher frame rates than Valve's hardware
AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Strix Halo

Valve's decision to officially support SteamOS 3.8 on standard gaming PCs has opened the door to an entirely new class of Steam Machines - without requiring gamers to buy Valve's own hardware. Now, a new benchmark from YouTuber ETA Prime suggests that a high-end AMD-powered mini PC can outperform Valve's upcoming Steam Machine by a comfortable margin. The only problem? It also costs several times more.

The testing highlights both the flexibility of SteamOS and the growing appeal of AMD's latest integrated graphics, but it also raises an important question: how much extra performance is actually worth paying for?

Alienware OLED gaming monitor on a desk

OLED has been one of the clearest upgrades gaming monitors have received in years, but the problem has always been the price. Cutting-edge OLED gaming monitors have mostly lived in enthusiast territory, especially if you wanted a panel larger than 30 inches. Dell’s Alienware is now making that jump a little easier with its new 34-inch ultrawide QD-OLED gaming monitor, the AW3426DW.

The monitor was first shown at CES 2026 and is now available as part of Alienware’s 30th-anniversary lineup, alongside two more affordable VA models. At $799.99, the AW3426DW is still expensive, but for a 34-inch ultrawide with a 5-stack Penta Tandem QD-OLED panel, the price is lower than expected.
