The best free music download sites in 2026

From free albums to live recordings, these sites offer music worth keeping. Here’s what each lets you download and where restrictions apply

Streaming is convenient until a song disappears, a subscription expires, or the internet connection gives up halfway through an album. There’s still something reassuring about having the file. Building that collection doesn’t have to mean paying for every track, either.

Free music download sites offer independent releases, live concerts, classical performances, and background music. Some artists give away entire albums. Others make individual songs downloadable or let listeners choose what to pay. Finding something good takes a little exploring, especially if the usual streaming recommendations have started to feel like the same playlist wearing a different hat.

Recommended Videos

The main thing to establish is what the download provides. Some services offer files that work in other players; others save music inside an app for offline listening, as Spotify does. And if the plan involves putting a song in a video or podcast, its license needs a closer look.

Free Music Archive

Best for independent music with searchable licensing options

Free Music Archive is a good starting point when the search has a few requirements beyond “something to listen to.” Its license and duration filters help narrow the selection before getting attached to a track that won’t fit a project.

For personal listening, the lack of an account requirement removes one obstacle. There’s no need to create another profile just to save a few MP3s. An account can wait until features such as favorites become useful.

How to download and check permissions

Use the downward arrow beside a track to download an individual MP3, or the arrow beneath album artwork for an album download. Open Specific conditions in the download pop-up to inspect the license. FMA’s help page covers these controls.

The licensing filters are worth using early when searching for project music. Permissions differ between recordings, and some older entries carry an FMA Limited License that allows personal downloading, listening, and streaming without broader reuse rights.

FMA’s video guidance explains attribution and the conditions for using music with images. Save the track’s title, artist, source link, and license together. Reconstructing the credits at midnight is nobody’s idea of a productive evening.

SoundCloud

Best for discovering artists who offer direct downloads

SoundCloud makes the most sense for following artists and picking up the tracks they choose to give away. It takes more patience as a download destination because a song that streams for free won’t necessarily offer a separate file.

Check for the download option before planning to save a release. The uploader controls its availability, and the file comes in the original uploaded format rather than a standard format chosen by SoundCloud.

How to download

Sign in through the web, open an individual track, and look for Download file beneath its waveform. If the option isn’t there, the uploader hasn’t enabled a direct download. Whole playlists aren’t available through this feature.

The distinction between downloading and offline listening is particularly easy to miss here. SoundCloud’s download guidance separates direct files from mobile offline access through Go or Go+. A subscription won’t produce a folder of songs to move into another player.

Audiomack

Best for listening offline on a phone

Audiomack is a better fit for filling an offline listening queue on a phone than for organizing a desktop music collection. Its mobile app supports downloads of songs, albums, and playlists, while trending releases, top charts, and recently added music provide several starting points for discovery.

Start with those browsing options when there isn’t a particular artist in mind. They give the search some direction without requiring a carefully assembled playlist first.

How downloads work

Open a track in the app and tap the download icon below the artwork. Manage saved music through the library.

Don’t assume every saved track will appear in another music player. Audiomack’s help center distinguishes eligible music-folder downloads from tracks restricted to the app, but doesn’t establish identical behavior across operating systems.

Premium downloads also carry additional limits on the free service. Audiomack describes a limited selection that listeners can swap without an Audiomack+ subscription, while the subscription expands access. It’s worth establishing which tracks fall into that category before assembling a large offline queue.

Live Music Archive

Best for full concerts and alternate performances

The Internet Archive’s Live Music Archive rewards a specific kind of curiosity. Search for an artist, then follow the dates, venues, and recording sources. For anyone interested in how a set changed across a tour, those details are a large part of the appeal.

A single show may have several recordings. Preview them before downloading: the source can matter as much as the performance, and the first result isn’t automatically the one to keep.

How to download

Open a show page and find Download Options. Choose an available format for individual tracks or a ZIP containing the full set. FLAC preserves the lossless source, while MP3 versions take up less space where available.

The archive hosts recordings from artists who permit noncommercial sharing of their live material. Each artist’s collection policy can exclude particular shows or recording sources, so that page is the place to check permissions.

The archive’s help page explains the download options and noncommercial distribution rules. Keep the recording details with the files, especially when saving more than one version of the same concert.

Jamendo Music

Best for exploring a large independent music catalog

Jamendo Music is worth considering when discovery matters more than finding a familiar hit. It advertises more than 600,000 songs from over 40,000 independent artists, giving listeners plenty of room to wander.

Start with a track preview rather than treating the catalog’s size as a reason to download everything in sight. When something clicks, use its download option and check the release information for the attached permissions.

Music downloads versus commercial licensing

Pay attention to which Jamendo service is open. Jamendo Music provides free streaming and downloads, while Jamendo Licensing is the separate paid offering for rights covering videos, advertising, business use, and other projects.

The similar names make this an easy distinction to miss. Jamendo’s royalty-free licenses involve an initial purchase without ongoing royalty fees under the applicable terms. A free download from the music service doesn’t automatically include those paid permissions.

For listening, begin with Jamendo Music. For a business or production, establish the required rights before choosing a license.

Musopen

Best for classical music and accompanying scores

Musopen gives a classical music search some useful structure. Browse by composer, performer, instrument, period, or musical form instead of relying on a vague search for “relaxing piano.” It offers MP3 downloads and sheet music for following a score or learning a piece.

The free Lite plan allows five music downloads per day, so a little selectiveness helps. It’s a reasonable setup for gradually building a collection, but less convenient for a large downloading session.

What to check before downloading

Open the specific recording to inspect its download and license information. The composer’s name alone doesn’t settle the rights.

An old composition can have a much newer recording with a different copyright status. Musopen’s FAQ explains the distinction and says it cannot guarantee that every user-uploaded recording is in the public domain.

That matters most when choosing music for reuse. Find the performance that fits, then assess that recording’s permissions rather than assuming the age of the piece clears everything.

Last.fm

Best for a straightforward free-download directory

Last.fm’s Free Music Downloads page is a useful bookmark for occasional browsing. Tracks and artists appear in a straightforward list, making it a sensible stop when the goal is finding a few songs without choosing an album first.

Go directly to that directory. Searching the wider Last.fm database can lead to plenty of music that isn’t available as a free download.

Follow a track’s download option, then explore the artist’s own release pages if it earns repeat listens. This entry doesn’t need a complicated strategy: its appeal is having a list to work through.

SoundClick

Best for independent songs and browsing beats

SoundClick combines free personal-listening downloads with a marketplace for beats and commercial licenses. Head for its search filters or dedicated free MP3 download page to avoid working through paid listings.

MP3 is the main free option, though some artists offer lossless WAV or AIFF files. Check the individual release for those choices rather than expecting the same selection everywhere.

Free listening downloads and beat licenses

The distinction to watch is between saving a song to enjoy and using an instrumental in a production. SoundClick’s FAQ treats these differently.

A free beat can be useful for trying an idea, but recording vocals over it and releasing the result commercially requires the appropriate rights. Read the license before getting too attached to the track. Paid options can include additional files and production assets as well as broader permissions.

Bandcamp

Best for free albums and flexible audio formats

Bandcamp is a good place to start with a whole album rather than collecting scattered tracks. The catch is the price field: “name your price” doesn’t always mean free, so check whether the release accepts zero before proceeding.

The format selector is especially useful. Options include MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF. Pick MP3 for smaller files or FLAC or ALAC for a lossless collection. Our MP3 vs. MP4 explainer also discusses AAC audio for anyone weighing the smaller-file options.

How to download a free release on Bandcamp

  1. Open the artist’s track or album page and check the price.
  2. Choose a free release or enter zero for a name-your-price release that allows it.
  3. Follow the prompts. For a release obtained by entering $0, Bandcamp says to provide an email address to receive the download link.
  4. Follow the link and choose an audio format from the download screen’s dropdown.
  5. Save the file. For a packaged album download, extract it before adding the tracks to a music player.

Keep the download email. Releases obtained by entering $0 don’t automatically appear in the Bandcamp fan collection, making that link easier to lose than it should be.

Bandcamp’s collection guidance explains the distinction, while its download instructions cover the link and format selector.

Pixabay

Best for background music in creative projects

Pixabay Music is a practical starting point when the brief is a mood or scene rather than a particular artist. It offers MP3 downloads, Editor’s Choice selections, and topical searches. Curated playlists such as Commercial, Tutorials and Vlogs and Powerful Percussion give broad requests a little more direction.

Browse those collections before disappearing into a long keyword search. A playlist organized around the intended use can be a better starting point than a description as broad as “upbeat.”

Keep the download’s supporting information

The Pixabay Content License allows free use and adaptation without mandatory attribution, subject to its restrictions. It prohibits standalone sale or distribution of substantially unchanged content, so incorporating music into a project is different from republishing the track itself.

Save the track page and any available license certificate with the audio. Pixabay’s FAQ explains that some contributors register music with Content ID, meaning a permitted use can still trigger a claim.

For tracks without a certificate, keep the download link, filename, and license summary. A little filing now beats hunting for a forgotten track after a video gets flagged.

What does “free music” actually allow?

Free downloads, royalty-free music, and public-domain recordings mean different things. A download can cost nothing while remaining copyrighted. A royalty-free license can require payment. Public-domain status depends on the particular work and recording.

Creative Commons licenses use several conditions to identify permissions:

  • BY: Requires attribution.
  • NC: Restricts commercial use.
  • ND: Limits sharing adaptations.
  • SA: Requires shared adaptations to use the same or a permitted compatible license.

These conditions can appear together. Video use deserves particular attention: Creative Commons treats synchronizing music with moving images as an adaptation for its licenses. NoDerivatives restrictions can therefore apply even when the recording hasn’t been edited. Its official FAQ explains the distinctions.

For a published project, save the license with the audio and follow its attribution and usage requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download current hit songs for free?

That depends on what the artist or rights holder chooses to offer. These services don’t provide every commercial release at no charge.

Start with the artist’s official page. SoundCloud downloads depend on uploader settings, while Bandcamp downloads depend on release pricing.

Which site is best for lossless downloads?

Bandcamp offers lossless formats including FLAC and ALAC for downloadable releases. Live Music Archive also provides lossless recordings, depending on the show.

Choose Bandcamp for artist releases and Live Music Archive for concerts. A lossless file preserves the source audio; it can’t rescue a poor recording. Lossless also doesn’t automatically mean hi-res audio, which refers to resolution above CD quality.

Will downloaded music play in another app?

An accessible audio file can play in another compatible player. A track saved only to a service’s offline library may stay restricted to that app.

Audiomack’s help center describes both download types. SoundCloud separates direct web downloads from subscription-based mobile offline listening.

Can I use downloaded music in a YouTube video or podcast?

Only when its permissions cover the intended use. Check the track’s license for commercial activity, adaptations, and attribution. The platform-specific guidance above explains where those conditions differ.

How we selected these sites

We reviewed and tested each service’s published download options, available formats, and licensing terms, focusing on what listeners can save and where restrictions apply. We also distinguished transferable audio files from music saved only for offline playback inside an app.

Skullcandy is now part of Bose, but its bold identity isn’t going anywhere
Bold style, meet big sound. Skullcandy just joined the Bose family.
Skullcandy headphone man

If you own a pair of Skullcandy earbuds, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard Bose without realizing it. Now, the two companies are making things official. Bose has bought Skullcandy, the brand that made a name for itself with eye-catching headphones and a whole lot of attitude.

This deal didn’t come out of nowhere. For the past few years, Skullcandy has been packing Bose’s audio tech into its earbuds and headphones under the Sound by Bose label. That team-up worked so well that Bose decided to go all in and bring Skullcandy into the family.

I’ve sacrificed too many charging cables to my car’s USB port (even the braided ones). All so my playlist could follow me down the road.

Spotify just launched a fully native car app that runs on the car’s infotainment system, with no phone or cable required. However, it’s only available for Audi owners right now.

Apple Music just got a new logo. And yeah, it’s inspired by sound and liquid.
What if you blast music through a clear liquid? You get ripples that inspire a new design language for Apple Music.
New Apple Music Logo

Apple just revealed a new brand identity for Apple Music. The logo with its iconic pink and white color scheme is gone. The design is almost identical, but we now have a monochrome look for the icon, with a black tone set against a white backdrop. Of course, there are also elements of liquid glass alongside the corners. That's just about it. What's fascinating is the story and how Apple actually landed on this visual.

The company says it worked with musician Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics to come up with the new design. Interestingly, in a brief video, Apple says that it actually used music to create the visuals. The video shows an Apple Music logo-shaped item submerged in a clear liquid, with ripples periodically appearing on the surface. " Essentially, the idea was to create the perfect sound wave. We take a frequency, and we play it through a rig," says the company. Take a look at the video below:
