Rumor: Nexus 7 refresh could be coming this month, complete with Snapdragon 600 power

More news about a possible Nexus 7 refresh has emerged, and in a relatively unusual way. A “live chat” conversation said to take place between a customer and Asus Support, screenshots of which have been published on a Google+ account, has revealed a potential release window for the tablet, along with a complete list of its specifications. While the Nexus 7 isn’t specifically mentioned, the details relate to a device named the Asus K009, a model number previously linked with the next Google tablet.

If the information shared during the chat is accurate, the next Nexus 7 will be a considerable step up from the previous model. The screen size should stay the same at 7-inches, but the resolution will be increased to 1980 x 1200. While this sounds a little strange (1920 x 1200 is a more common resolution), it does match an analyst report published back in May.

Another spec change mentioned in both this rumor and the analyst report is the addition of a 5-megapixel camera, along with a 1.2-megapixel video call camera on the front of the device. The processor may also be changed, and the Tegra 3 could be abandoned in favor of a Snapdragon 600 chip supported by 2GB of RAM. Other possible features include NFC, 32GB of storage space, a 4000mAh battery, and a choice of Wi-Fi or 4G LTE models. Google Android 4.3 is mentioned as its operating system, a version which hasn’t been made official, but is expected to do so soon.

As for the release date, we could be treated to a launch before the end of July. Apparently, this information comes from internal documentation, and was shared because the customer was, “eager.” Whether it’s real or not is impossible to say, but the specification is inline with previous rumors, and July has been hinted at as a release date before too. With July already under way, it shouldn’t be long before we find out if this information is genuine, or speculative fan-fiction.

The Honor Magic 6 RSR is my new favorite Android phone of 2024
Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
