We’re officially in fall now, and October is right around the corner. I’m biding my time before loading you up with another batch of spooky games for the holiday season, but the amount of big games in the first half of October alone is kind of scary. You can already read my glowing review of Ghost of Yotei, and Battlefield 6 might give Black Ops 7 a run for its money as the best FPS of the year. And that’s only scratching the surface of releases.
Whatever you have on your wishlist for October, I found the best PS Plus games you can play this weekend to wet your appetite.
Infamous: First Light
I bet you thought I’d take the easy way out and just suggest Ghost of Tsushima this weekend, didn’t you? As much as I love that game, replaying it days before Yotei might be a little too much of a good thing. If you never played it, then that’s a bigger problem and you need to fix it immediately. But, for everyone else, I think First Light is the perfect hidden gem to check out this weekend. This stand-alone game from Sucker Punch takes place in the Infamous: Second Son timeline, but is totally enjoyable if you never played or don’t remember any details about that game. It is a short enough experience to polish off in a weekend, has unique powers, a detailed world to explore with unique powers, and a compelling female protagonist. What else could you ask for?
Infamous: First Light is available now on PS4.
Digimon Survive
I’m just getting my toes wet in the world of Digimon since Time Stranger has grabbed my attention, so I looked back at the PS Plus library and found none other than Digimon Survive. Fair warning: this is not the traditional turn-based RPG like Time Stranger is. Survive is more of a tactics game and a visual novel hybrid. Wait, don’t skip ahead yet! Give me a chance to sell you on it! In terms of gameplay, think of Final Fantasy Tactics, but more streamlined. It isn’t simple, but it won’t break your brain. The story, if you can accept its visual novel framing, is really good. Like, when did Digimon media start having such great stories? It’s a bit “anime,” but there are great characters, a thrilling mystery, and loads of possible endings to get.
Digimon Survive is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
Battlefield 1
It’s almost Battlefield time! I already suggested you go back to the most recent game a few weeks ago, but now we’re going way back to WWI with Battlefield 1. The multiplayer here is still great, and people are still playing it so you shouldn’t have a problem finding matches, but I want to mainly suggest the campaign. This episodic structure showcases various people and groups in different battles across The Great War. Not only does this add a lot of variety to the mission structure, but gives a lot of different perspectives in short, powerful little vignettes. We don’t know what the campaign in Battlefield 6 will look like yet, but I hope it takes a page out of Battlefield 1‘s book.
Battlefield 1 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
