China Unblocks Some Sites

China has earned the ire of journalists and human rights groups for apparently reneging on an agreement between the country and the International Olympic Committee to give journalists full access to the Internet during the Olympics.
However, as of yesterday, the BBC reported that China had unblocked its Chinese language site (the English language site was unblocked back in March) and the Chinese-language Wikipedia site.

"This is a great opportunity for us to show Chinese readers what first-class journalism we can deliver," said Lorna Ball, had of the BBC’s Chinese service. "But of course we will also want to check if the site is still available after the Olympics have ended."

An IOC official welcomed the move, saying:

"This is a good sign. It’s a work in progress. These are initial, encouraging signs."

As of this morning, the BBC was reporting that some other previously blocked sites, including Amnesty Inernational, had been unblocked, not on for reporters, but also at Internet cafes in Beijing.

Close up of the Chrome logo on the top of a Chromebook.

There’s now a better way for you to sift through your mounting pile of tabs on Google Chrome. As part of the Chrome 81 build, Google is now rolling out a feature that lets you group your active tabs. The update was slated to arrive earlier, but the company had to postpone it as its workforce adjusted to collaborating remotely.

Once you have updated to the latest version on your Mac or Windows PC, you can cluster your tabs together. To create a new tab group, all you need to do is right-click a tab and select the Add to new group option. Chrome will highlight a group by color-coding the tabs and place a dot on the left of the first tab.

Google’s coronavirus info site is live (but not as Trump described it)
Google's new coronavirus information website

Google finally launched a website to help streamline testing for coronavirus (officially called COVID-19) on Friday, March 20, following a bizarre introduction a week earlier in which President Donald Trump announced that Google was building the site -- and Google itself said it wasn't.

There are, in fact, two coronavirus-related websites that were recently launched by Google's parent company, Verily. First, there is Project Baseline, a screening site only for the state of California. Launched last week, it shows people how and where Californians in two highly affected counties can get screened for the disease and gives information on who is eligible for screening.
