It’s not all doom and gloom on the Xbox front–Major Nelson is still tending the hearth, and he’s delivered details about the August 2014 system update for Xbox One, which will start rolling out in the coming week to users with early access, and to the rest of the consoles over the following month. The changes are largely derived from the Xbox Feedback channel which Microsoft opened last month to get a better sense of what fans want from the console.

The activity feed on your dashboard for both the console and SmartGlass is getting expanded with more information about what your friends have been up to, such as when they were last online and what they were doing. The feature is evolving to resemble your Facebook wall (or PlayStation 4’s activity feed, if you want to be a jerk about it), with the ability to post text and game clips and “like” entries that pop up. You will receive notifications when your friends engage with your feed content.

Rather than having to wait until you get home to download the hot new releases, you will soon be able to make purchases from the mobile app, which will set your console downloading to have the game ready when you get back. The update also adds support for 3D content to the console’s Blu-ray player.

Check out the full list of features for the August update over at the Xbox Wire.

XDefiant certainly has plenty of guns and fast-paced gameplay to offer right out of the gate, but if you want to make the most of your options in gunfights, you'll need to choose a faction that complements your playstyle. Each faction features three unlockable characters who all share universal passives, abilities, and ultras that can turn the tide of battle in a heartbeat. Below, we've listed a breakdown of each faction and their kits so you can figure out what suits you best.

Note: You can change your faction mid-battle, so always feel free to swap between them on the fly to better help your team accomplish specific tasks.

Video game genres, explained
Link and Zelda under Hyrule Castle in "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom."

Every entertainment medium uses genres to help people understand what a game or movie or song will be like before experiencing it. In a sea of nearly limitless content, this is essential for allowing people to more easily find the things they are interested in -- and to avoid the ones they aren't. However, genres also need to be broad enough to still be useful, meaning most things don't fit perfectly into any one box. Games are in an even trickier situation since genres can not only describe the tone and target audience, but also how the game is played. This has created a whole new set of genres and subgenres exclusive to games that can be quite confusing. We'll go over the most recognized video game genres, as well as some subgenres within them, to explain what they are and give some examples.

While we will do our best to organize games and genres in a logical way, it is still a subjective practice.
