Huawei rounded out its mid-to-low-end smartphone offerings with the introduction of three new phones at IFA 2014. The Ascend G7 is the company’s all-metal mid-range offering, while the Ascend G620S and Ascend Y550 make up the budget end.

Ascend G7

The Ascend G7 features an all-metal body and a 5.5-inch screen with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. Huawei added a 1.2GHz quad-core 64-bit processor and 2GB of RAM to power the G7. The low-end processor is really what makes the G7 a mid-range phone instead of a premium one. The phone comes with 16GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded up to 64GB using a MicroSD card.

The phone comes with a 13-megapixel back camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. It also has a 3,000mAh battery, which should keep it juiced up for more than a full day. The all-metal build gives the G7 a classy look and feel, despite the mid-range specs. Overall, the G7 looks to be a prime middle-of-the-road device.

Huawei will reportedly ship the device in November for around 270 euros or $355.

Ascend G620S

The Huawei Ascend G620S looks a lot like one of Samsung’s faux leather plastic smartphones in terms of design, but it has solidly mid-to-low-end specs. The phone has a 5-inch screen with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 401 quad-core processor and 1GB RAM.

The G620S sports just 8GB of internal storage, but luckily it’s expandable up to 32GB via a MicroSD card. Huawei placed an 8-megapixel camera on the back of the phone and a 2-megapixel camera on its front.

The Ascend G620S should arrive in late October and cost around £150-200 or $250-$330. It’s unknown if this phone will reach the United States, but we think it’s doubtful.

Ascend Y550

The Ascend Y550 is definitely a budget phone with low-end specs. The Y550 has a 4.5-inch screen with a miserly 854 x 480 pixel resolution. The budget phone is powered by the same processor and amount of RAM as the Ascend G620S. The Y550 comes with a 5-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. the device only has 4GB of internal storage, but a MicroSD card slot allows you to expand it. Huawei also added a 2000mAh battery.

The phone will cost about £99, which amounts to about $165 when it debuts in October.

The Honor Magic 6 RSR is my new favorite Android phone of 2024
Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
