Microsoft’s newest Lumia smartphones are colorful, but the spec sheets are dull

Microsoft has announced its second and third Lumia smartphones, following the Lumia 535without Nokia’s branding. The Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 are both low-end, affordable devices, and are set to go on sale in certain markets next month. Both are priced at less than $100.

The Lumia 435 runs Windows Phone 8.1 with the most recent Lumia Denim update, and comes in shockingly bright orange and green, or a more muted white or black color scheme. The rear cover is removable, so you can swap between colors. While the colors may make it stand out, the spec sheet doesn’t. The screen measures 4-inches and has a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, while the rear camera has 2 megapixels. A VGA front cam sits above the screen.

Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon 200 chip powers the phone with 1GB of RAM, and there’s a healthy 8GB of internal memory, plus a MicroSD card slot to increase this amount by up to 128GB. The 1560mAh battery should return more than 11 hours talktime, and Microsoft has included various apps of its own, including Skype and OneNote. The Lumia 435 also comes with Cortana, the Windows Phone virtual assistant.

The Lumia 532 is very similar. It has the same 4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel touchscreen, memory capacity, and battery. The difference is in the processor and the rear camera. The former is now a quad-core version of the Snapdragon 200, while the latter has been bumped up to 5 megapixels, with improved focal length, and a smaller aperture.

Microsoft plans to release both phones during February in Europe, India, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. The Lumia 435 costs 70 euros, and the Lumia 532 80 euros, or about $82 and $94 respectively.

Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
