For Microsoft, that means a new version of its ubiquitous Office suite. While Office 2016 might not offer a great deal in terms of wholly new functionality, there are plenty of modernizations designed to help the package keep up with some of the new competition that’s emerged in recent years.
The best of those improvements are better support for working collaboratively in the cloud, as well as updated integration for touch controls. With online alternatives like Google Docs snapping at the heels of the Office suite, it’s clear that Microsoft is looking to the future with the changes that have been made.
The increase in competition might also explain why the company is running a promotion that allows users to gain a big discount on an Office 365 subscription, just for being an early adopter of the latest version of Windows.
Microsoft’s Terry Myerson drew attention to this offer in a blog post congratulating the Office team on a successful launch of their product yesterday. While this week is the first opportunity Windows users have had to upgrade to Office 2016, the Mac version of the package actually launched some two months ago via Office 365.
The promotion allows users who are running Windows 10 and have Office 2010 or earlier to get a 50 percent discount on a one-year subscription to Office 365 personal. To take advantage of the deal, just open up the Get Office app that should have been installed on your PC alongside Windows 10.
