Sony Pictures tempts NFL players to see Concussion with free admission

The NFL may be central to the plot of Will Smith’s Concussion, but how eager players and team owners will be to watch the film remains to be seen. Now, however, they have an extra incentive: Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that players, owners, and their plus-ones will be able to see the movie for free while it’s in theaters.

The decision is part of Sony’s strategy to encourage players to see the film, which has also included numerous advanced, private screenings in cities with an NFL team. Producers Ridley Scott and Giannina Scott described the film in a press release as being “a movie for the players” and a story about “courage that changed the game,” but it’s hard to deny that the film also presents a scary reality for them. After a showing with 70 former players and their families, Sports Illustrated’s MMQB blog described Concussion as “a panic-inducing horror flick” for some attendees.

It’s not surprising that players would feel that way. The film tells the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith) as he investigates the death of former Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster and discovers that repeated blows to the head can lead to a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Omalu fights to make the NFL recognize the disease, whose dangers include dementia, Alzheimer’s, depression, and more.

However members of the NFL may feel about the film, it has accomplished Sony’s goal of getting players in “the national dialogue about the film.” Darrelle Revis, a cornerback for the New York Jets, for example, attended the New York premiere of the film and said that “it hit home pretty hard,” according to Newsday.

Other players who decide to catch a showing will be able to bring their NFLPA membership card to any Cinemark theater in the United States and get a free ticket for themselves and a guest. Concussion comes to theaters on Christmas Day.

Does sex still sell at the multiplex? We'll find out this weekend when Challengers, a steamy new drama starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist, premieres in theaters nationwide. The movie's proven to be a hit with critics so far, so maybe some moviegoers will be in the mood to watch a love triangle set on the tennis courts in New Rochelle, New York.

For those who prefer to stay at home for their entertainment, Netflix is usually the go-to option for almost every genre imaginable. This weekend, we've queued up three movies worthy of your time and attention. One is a new 2024 thriller about an interview gone wrong, and the others are two 1995 movies that still hold up after nearly three decades.

The best sci-fi movies on Max right now
Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation.

There were only two notable sci-fi additions to Max in April: Terminator Salvation and Source Code. Both are very good movies, but it's been clear for months that Max is coasting on its sci-fi lineup. It's not enough to just have great films to watch, especially if they're on loan from other studios with an expiration date at some point in the future. Once films like Alien, Avatar, and all of the classic Star Trek films leave, Max's sci-fi library is going to look pretty weak.

For now, we're just going to have to live with the available selection for the best sci-fi movies on Max. But we also added Escape From L.A. just to give you more than two options that weren't on this list last month. If you want to see the rest of the films, just keep scrolling down.

3 Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 26-28)
Luke Kirby and Michelle Williams in Take This Waltz.

As you've probably noticed, this is the last weekend of April. That means Hulu is about to lose some of its best movies before the new titles arrive May 1. And while we've already shared five great movies leaving Hulu at the end of April, those aren't the only terrific titles going out the door.

That's why this week's picks for the three Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend are off the beaten path from the films we've previously chosen for April. We've picked out a historical drama, a romantic dramedy, and a remix of a classic Charles Dickens story. But since these movies are only around until April 30, you should catch these flicks before they go off to some other streamer.
