Caller ID is making a comeback on the Samsung Galaxy S7

The most interesting feature on the Samsung Galaxy S7 may not a better camera, or some new gimmick, but a piece of software that could change the way you take actual phone calls. The manufacturer announced a plan to integrate smartphone caller ID service Whitepages to the S7 at the system level, layering public listings on top of user contacts, making unknown calls feel a lot less random.

In other words: No more staring a phone lock screen, trying figure who’s on the other end based on the area code.

To minimize the number of unwanted calls, Whitepages adds a call-checking spam filter. Users can flag and block calls from telemarketers or other aggressive calls as spam, which builds a database of unwanted numbers to warn others. When users get a call from a known “spam” number, they will see a stop sign with an X, with a warning that explains why the number has been flagged.

On the other hand, Whitepages integration adds searchable public listings to your contact search bar. No more switching to Chrome for a business listing to grab a number, it’s all “in” your contacts. The search can also draw on geo-based services, such as Yelp, to help local business in a pinch.

Obviously, caller ID has been around forever. Whitepages, in fact, already offers this service via an app available on iOS and Android. However, integrating it at the system level makes it easier to use and cultivates a larger, more effective database to draw on.

The Galaxy S7 will offer Whitepages support 15 in countries as part of the Samsung integration; Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the U.K., and the United States.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 will be available in 11 countries March 11.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is definitely one of the best smartphones on the market right now, no doubt about that. You get incredible performance with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, plenty of RAM and storage, a whopping 200MP camera, two telephoto lenses for 3x and 5x optical zoom, S Pen integration, and more. It’s certainly an impressive package.

But it’s not perfect. In fact, some weaknesses could be improved in the next version, the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Here’s what I hope to see next year.

Samsung’s cheap Galaxy S24 alternative is seriously tempting

If you don’t want to pay out for the shiny Samsung Galaxy S24, but still want a great new Samsung smartphone, then the Galaxy A55 could be for you. It keeps the same cool design as the expensive Galaxy S24, but as the specification is more sensible (and there's none of the Galaxy AI stuff) the price stays low. What's more, there's a second, even cheaper new phone from Samsung to consider too.

The Galaxy A55 is the successor to the Galaxy A54, a phone we really liked, and that's why we are very tempted by the updated version for 2024. Like its predecessor, it comes in some great colors — Awesome Ice Blue, Awesome Lilac, Awesome Lemon, and Awesome Navy. Yes, Samsung really does call its color range Awesome. The phone has a metal chassis and a glass back, with a 6.6-inch, 120Hz Super AMOLED screen on the front.

I saw the Samsung Galaxy Ring. Here’s what I love (and what I’m worried about)

After announcing the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in January, Samsung ended its big Unpacked event with one big surprise: the Galaxy Ring. Samsung teased a render of its upcoming smart ring, but beyond that, it hasn't said anything since. That is, until now.

Samsung had the Galaxy Ring on display at MWC 2024, and I got a chance to see it for myself. Based on what I saw from the ring, plus a few new things Samsung has confirmed about it, I think Samsung is getting a lot right. There are also clear areas where Samsung is lagging behind the competition.
