British action man actor Jason Statham wants you to buy the new LG G5. After pre-announced the release of its first commercial, the final full version went live on the same day the G5 itself made its way into the hands of early buyers. Celebs promoting smartphones and technology is nothing new. Well-known faces are always popping up to convince us something’s worth buying, but LG’s so happy with its choice of star who will be the face of the LG G5, it has used it throughout the ad, on every body.
Taking place in a world populated solely by multiple Jason Stathams, everyone uses the G5 and its modular Friends, which makes getting things done a little difficult. One Stath is trying to enjoy his phone on the subway, but is surrounded by others trying to sneak a look, while another almost falls over a Rolling Bot during a robbery, where the security guard is too busy controlling the robot with a G5 to worry. LG’s telling us the G5 is so compelling and absorbing, we won’t be able to resist.
Add in a remix of the Finnish folk tune Ievan Polkka featuring the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku as the soundtrack, and you’ve got one of the most bizarre, visually arresting phone commercials we can remember. When the teasers were released, we questioned whether Mr. Statham would punch the phone, cover it in oil and wrestle it, or drive an Audi over it really, really quickly? Although none of these things happen exactly, he does have a fight with an umbrella, and ride both bulls and a motorcycle, so we can’t complain too much. Naturally, he also has the opportunity to do some muscle flexing as he swaps out the G5’s modules.
Mr Statham is obviously excited to work on the commercial, and said in the original press release, “I think the concept that LG is putting forward with the G5 and its modular design is going to catch on with consumers.” While we’d never question any statement made by Mr Statham, because he’s bigger than us, the G5’s modular design is a big risk for LG due to its uniqueness in a market that seems to embrace conformity. For the G5 to be a success, people must really want its modules.
