Watch this hilarious ‘Apple engineer’ explain the MacBook Pro’s lack of ports

Apple Engineer Talks About New 2016 Macbook Pro
Apple’s decision to drop all but the USB-C ports on its latest MacBook Pro model annoyed many of the potential customers who’d been waiting an inordinate amount of time for the refreshed laptop to arrive.

So why did it do it? According to an “Apple engineer” in a new parody video (above), it’s so the tech giant could boost profits by forcing users to buy a bunch of dongles. Actually, some might agree with him.

Created in the same way as those amusingly subtitled Downfall videos, the engineer, who “worked in Apple’s laptop division,” explains to an interviewer that during the development of the latest MacBook Pro, Apple boss Tim Cook pressured them to create something more profitable than the iPhone.

At a meeting, one of the team members suggested they should “remove the ports and sell them as dongles.” Recounting the story, the engineer is unable to contain himself at the sheer absurdity of the idea – or possibly the pure brilliance of it.

Laughing uncontrollably, he especially enjoys the idea that everyone who buys Apple’s latest laptop will “have to carry around a bag full of dongles,” adding that Tim Cook is “crazy for dongles.”

There’s plenty more choice lines that’ll have you chuckling, so check it out if you need a laugh.

Responding to the outcry from disgruntled Apple fans looking to buy a new MacBook Pro, the Cupertino company on Friday slashed the prices of its range of USB-C dongles.

The company said it recognized that “many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem,”

The price cuts, which will save users between $10 and $20 a pop,  will run till the end of the year.

An Apple MacBook Pro 14 sits open on a table.

If you’ve been waiting for Apple to launch an OLED MacBook Pro, there’s some bad news: it might not come out for another three years. That’s a serious wait considering many of Apple’s rivals have already brought out some of the best OLED laptops on the market.

The news comes from display industry tipster Ross Young, who is well-known for having a solid track record when it comes to Apple leaks. Young tweeted a link to a Reuters article outlining Samsung’s plans for an OLED fabrication plant, adding the comment: “This fab is for 14” and 16” OLED MacBook Pros from 2026.”

Apple could be working on a secret OLED MacBook Air
The screen of the MacBook Air M2.

Apple could be planning a new MacBook Air equipped with an OLED display, according to Korean tech website TheElec. Interestingly, there are suggestions that the MacBook Air could get this high-end tech before Apple’s flagship MacBook Pro models.

Right now, none of Apple’s MacBook laptops come with OLED panels, and instead use Liquid Retina displays based on LCD technology. That could all change if TheElec’s claims are accurate, however.

Since the launch of the redesigned MacBook Pro in 2021, Windows laptops have struggled to produce a true rival. The new Lenovo Slim Pro, though, looks to be the full package, especially in terms of its performance and screen.

The top-of-the-line new model, the Slim Pro 9i, matches the MacBook Pro in a few important ways, starting with the display. This is one of the first Windows laptops oriented toward creatives that adopts a mini-LED screen, switching from the OLED options that were previously available.
