Apple Arcade adds over 30 new games in its biggest expansion ever

Apple Arcade got a surprise update bringing 30 new games to the platform. The update brings much-anticipated games like Fantasian to the platform, as well as mobile classics.

The update is a significant overhaul for Apple’s gaming subscription service. Apple’s strategy initially revolved around launching new, original games on the platform. The new additions bring the service’s collection of games up past 180.

The new update adds two new categories to the service: Timeless Classics and App Store Greats. Timeless Classics brings basic games to iOS devices, such as Solitaire and Backgammon. The App Store Greats category includes hit mobile games like Monument Valley and Fruit Ninja Classic.

The update features new, exclusive Arcade Originals. That list includes some high-profile releases, such as PlatinumGames’ World of Demons, NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition, and a new take on The Oregon Trail. The biggest new addition is Fantasian, the long-awaited RPG by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.

The update comes after reports that Apple was planning a major strategic shift for the service. Last year, Bloomberg reported that the company was canceling some of its deals with developers. The move was reportedly part of an effort to refocus on user engagement on the service. The addition of old standby mobile games seems to support that theory, though the update does feature plenty of less hook-heavy new releases.

Apple Arcade is available for $5 a month with a one-month free trial. The service is included in the Apple One service as well, with monthly prices starting at $15.

Apple is easing up on its App Store guidelines so that it's now possible to "provide access to mini apps and games" within other apps.

While that may sound a bit confusing, it essentially means that a company like Microsoft can now release an iOS Xbox Game Pass app that supports Xbox Cloud Gaming and lets players stream multiple games right from that app. To use Xbox Cloud Gaming on an Apple device right now, you'd need to use the web browser version of the technology, which isn't as convenient or stable as streaming from Xbox consoles or official PC and Android apps.

Apple Vision Pro is getting three ‘spatial games’ including Fruit Ninja

The Apple Vision Pro will get three "spatial games" when it launches on February 2. Game Room, Super Fruit Ninja, and Apple Arcade standout What the Golf? will all launch on the platform, though Apple hasn't shared many details about them yet.

Previously, Apple had been underplaying the role of gaming on its new headset. We knew it would be able to access Apple Arcade games and other apps, playing them on a flat screen inside the headset, but it didn't seem like it had any new gaming component. When we asked our writers to give us a list of their favorite games of 2023, everyone had a different game in the top spot. We saw votes for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Alan Wake 2, Hi-Fi Rush, and even Sonic Superstars. Released by Nintendo in May after a long wait, Tears of the Kingdom would have been the industry's unequivocal game of the year in any other year. Although its competition was too stiff in this packed year for that to be the case, that doesn't make Tears of the Kingdom any less of an experience. In fact, I think that earning a spot near the top on almost everyone's personal list at Digital Trends demonstrates how widely appealing Nintendo's latest Zelda game is and that end-of-year gaming conversations should be about uplifting great games, not nitpicking their flaws to determine which one's the best.
Recognizing great games
Tears of the Kingdom is a monumental achievement in open-world game design. It essentially has three worlds stacked on top of each other. From almost any point in Hyrule, it's possible to stop, look around, and find several points of interest around, above, and below yourself. That alone makes it a game that consistently delivers a sense of awe and discovery, even after dozens of hours of playtime.
