How to break down equipment in Avowed

A character in avowed stands off with an enemy.
Obsidian Entertainment

Making sure your equipment is as powerful as possible is an obvious but essential tip and trick to remember while playing Avowed. Your skills will play a large part in combat, especially when you rebind them for easy access, but your armor and weapons will be the most important factors in how tough the game is to beat. Upgrading your gear is the best way to keep up with the difficulty, but it isn't long before you hit walls where you need much more materials than you have to get to the next tier. Breaking down extra weapons and armor you find will be the best way to get your hands on more of these precious materials, and you can do it right from the menu. Here's how.

How to break down equipment in Avowed

Any piece of armor or weapon can be broken down from the pause menu. When looking at that item, you can see what materials it will give you when broken down at the bottom of its description so you know if it will give you what you need. Generally speaking, the gear you break down will give the same materials needed to upgrade gear of that type. Wands give materials needed to upgrade wands, for example.

Step 1: Find some gear that you don't mind breaking into materials and losing.

Step 2: Open your menu and go to the Inventory

Step 3: Highlight the gear you want to break down.

Step 4: As long as you're not currently using it, hold X on console or R on PC to break it down into materials.

If you have anything you already upgraded and want to break that down because you found something better, you will still get back most of the materials you have added to it, but not all. In most cases, breakind down any excess gear you find is a better use than selling it for the small amount of gold they tend to net you.

For the first dozen or so hours of the game, you will be killing all your targets with Power Clashes, Offset Attacks, mounting them, and any other tips and tricks you've picked up along the way. However, you will eventually reach a point where you need to take a monster down without killing it. Like everything else in Monster Hunter Wilds, the game just sort of expects you to either already know how to do this or be able to figure out its mysterious systems on your own. This is a complex mechanic so we will break down all the steps to capture a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to capture monsters

Starting in mission 4-1, capturing monsters will start to become a requirement for progressing through the story. The tutorial itself gives you a basic idea of what to do, but it is far from sufficient for new hunters.

A haunter and palico in Monster Hunter Wilds.

There are a lot of unintuitive systems in Monster Hunter Wilds that you need to read a ton of tips and tricks to understand. For example, changing your character's appearance, changing your armor appearance, and editing your character are all different systems. The latter is especially odd since they require a consumable item called Character Edit Vouchers to access. To help you understand what the difference between these are and how you can get these special vouchers, here's a full breakdown of how you can edit your character in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to get and use character edit vouchers

Before we get to the bad news regarding Character Edit Vouchers, let's first go over the situations in which you would even need one. You can change a ton about your character by just changing their appearance at your Base Camp, but not everything. The only options that are locked behind the use of a voucher are:

A hunter leaps at a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Those coming into Monster Hunter Wilds after playing one or more earlier games in the series might think there aren't any tips and tricks left to learn. However, this entry changes up a lot of things, like how you play with friends and the new wishlist feature. When it comes to your weapon, you might have a favorite in mind going in, but even those have changed. Offeset attacks are a new mechanic that add a new layer to combat, but it isn't properly communicated and only applies to a few of the game's weapons. This new move can be one of the strongest in the game if you master it, so let's break down how offset attacks work.
How to use offset attacks

First, offset attacks are only applicable with certain heavy weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds. These include:
