Info Leaked On Nintendo’s Next Console

Apparently the same person that leaked information about Nintendo’s portable handheld the DS, has also leaked information about the big N’s next generation console.

  • That Nintendo is building gyroscopes into the controllers, presumably to add some sort of motion-control aspect to games.
  • The console will have dual processors and built-in broadband (we’re assuming Ethernet, but maybe also WiFi?).
  • There are no plans to connect the DS to the Revolution, but there could be some integration with the Game Boy Evolution.
  • The Revolution will have four controller ports, a hard drive, and support for high-resolution displays and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound.
  • The console will be backwards-compatibility with GameCube games, and in what would only be a swipe at Sony, its drive will use HD-DVD, rather than Blu-ray, discs.
  • The console will launch with a new Mario game (of course), and there is a new Zelda game in the works.

"Formerly known as GameShark, AI Shark is set to redefine the gaming landscape with its revolutionary AI-enhanced technology," Altec Lansing explains in a press release. Rumors about Nintendo's next console are heating up. GamesIndustry.biz sparked some conversation this week after publishing predictions from an industry analyst about what to expect from Nintendo's next system. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games predicts that the console won't be a drastic overhaul of the Switch, but rather an iterative successor. That's only a guess, but a plausible one that gamers are starting to accept as a real possibility.

If that does wind up being the case, Nintendo has a hard task ahead of it. The company has historically struggled with trying to capitalize on revolutionary hardware with smaller upgrades. The Nintendo Wii U was a flop in large part due to its confusing marketing. Some casual gamers weren't sure if it was a new console or just an upgrade to the Wii, stopping them from running out the door to trade in their beloved system. A Switch successor with all the same basic functions could run into the same issues if its plagued with unclear marketing.

2023 set an incredibly high bar for video game sequels
A screenshot from The Story So Far in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

It's not an overstatements to say that 2023 was one of the best years for video game sequels ever.

Simply looking at The Game Awards 2023’s Game of the Year nominations, all of which are titles from preexisting series, proves that. It’s not just that we received a lot of new video game sequels in 2023; that happens every year. No, what makes the game sequels of 2023 stand out is how many of them impressively build upon what came before. From Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to Baldur’s Gate 3, these follow-ups all looked at their predecessor, identified the weaker aspects, and directly addressed those issues.
