Oculus has the best VR device, so why waste time on anything else?

To the untrained eye, Oculus’s decision to stop work on its Go headset to focus on the Quest may seem a sign of trouble for another VR company. But, in fact, it’s the smartest move it could make and a sign that Oculus is gearing up for a bright future.

The Quest, quite simply, is a better product with the best qualities of the Go, and the ability to do more.

The Oculus Go was the Facebook-owned VR company’s first wireless headset. Its debut in 2018 came at a less-than-optimistic time for VR. Many critics and former-hopefuls alike panned the venture, ready to throw in VR with 3D and curved TVs, Google Glass, and other innovations no one asked for and no one wanted.

And while it was well-built, the Go was equally disappointing. It was a gimmicky entertainment device where you could watch videos in VR and play light games, but not much more. The Go’s limits also give it a short shelflife. The VR videos feel like a gimmick, awe-inspiring the first couple times and not worth the trouble shortly thereafter.

The Quest, however, was a turning point for Oculus. 

A year after Go’s launch, Quest did what no other product at the time had thought of: Combine the ease of less-powerful headset with enough power to accomplish at least some of what the heavy-hitters could. Suddenly, you could play more demanding games and wind down with YouTube after. It didn’t have the clunky wires of PS VR or HTC’s Vive.

I’ve tried several VR and AR headsets only to find that the tangle of wires always stopped me from going back. My PS VR system goes unused despite my love of exclusive title Astro Bot. 

The Quest took its impeccable design and added stellar features like hand tracking, which allowed you to forgo using a controller. It takes some getting used to, but the option gives VR an amazing new field of movement and interactivity. The link feature offered a cable to connect the Quest to a PC for the first time.

Oculus’s expansion of the function to allow for any compatible cable rather than a proprietary one made it comparable to the Vive, Rift, or Valve’s Index, which all require a PC hook-up to use.

This combination of accessibility and power makes it clear the Quest can fulfill the promise of the first VR true-believers: anyone can use it.

It has plenty to offer gamers, but like the wildly successful PlayStation 2, it merely uses gaming as a way into your household. Maybe the youngest would use the PS2 for gaming, but their parents could use the CD and DVD player.

The Quest-owner’s non-gaming friends and family have apps that allow you to do yoga, tai chi, meditation, YouTube, or the incredibly fun game Beat Saber.

Meanwhile, the audience for the Go remained ambiguous. 

By 2020, it’s clear the gaming and commercial markets have kept VR alive. And for the latter, the Go and Quest’s user-friendly UI and form make it an excellent option for the wider population. But if the Quest has that and more, the obvious question for Oculus is “Why do both?”

Clearly Oculus has an answer. The Go proved a substantial wireless VR experience could be done, but the Quest has long-since surpassed it.

There’s nothing wrong with letting go of earlier prototypes once they’ve run their course, and it’s a promising sign for a company like Oculus to realize that rather than wasting resources. Innovation doesn’t mean arriving at the product of the future, it’s a quest to get there.

Oculus Quest is the latest addition to the world of stand-alone virtual reality headsets. The new product announcement comes from Oculus’ Connect 5 keynote and is the result of the previously named Santa Cruz project. Focusing on what Oculus notes as the future of all VR experiences, Quest provides a powerful stand-alone VR experience with hand tracking that features six degrees of freedom. Launching in spring 2019 for $400, Quest is set to occupy a space between the company’s current Go and Rift headsets offerings.

Positioned as a more powerful and capable version of the previously released Oculus Go headset, the Quest introduces additional degrees of freedom, spatial awareness, and more advanced controllers. Oculus notes that the headset is set to bridge the gap between mobile VR experiences and full-fledged desktop experiences with a promise to port many of the existing games and apps available for the Rift to the new Quest platform.

Oculus confirms second-screen support is coming to Oculus Go

Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer John Carmack confirmed on Wednesday, May 2, that the Facebook-owned company is currently working on a second-screen component for the recently launched Oculus Go virtual reality headset. He said a demo is already available but getting it into the companion app for iOS and Android "will take a little while." 
The idea is to enable friends and family to view your VR experiences on a nearby TV or streaming device while you're deep in the virtual realm. Google's Daydream View already provides a similar feature, as owners can click on the Cast icon at the bottom of the interface to cast the current experience to a Chromecast-enabled device. 
Likewise, you can cast VR experiences from Samsung's Gear VR headset to a Chromecast-enabled device, too. As with the Daydream version, simply click on the Cast button to display your experiences on a Chromecast-enabled device. All you need is the latest version of the Oculus mobile app and Android. 
The Oculus Go is the latest VR headset from Facebook, joining the popular Oculus Rift for the PC. In Facebook's overall VR assault, the Oculus Go serves as an affordable low-end headset with standard head tracking that competes in the mobile VR space. The company's upcoming mid-range platform dubbed "Santa Cruz" will rely on six-degree inside-out tracking for total, tether-free movement. The current PC-dependent Oculus Rift serves as the "high-end" premium device. 
Both the Oculus Go and Samsung's Gear VR are powered by Oculus technology, but what sets them apart is how they are designed. The Oculus Go is a self-contained device that doesn't rely on a smartphone or a tethered PC. Meanwhile, Gear VR requires one of 12 Galaxy-branded smartphones ranging from the S6 to the current S9. But because both platforms are powered by Oculus, Gear VR experiences work on the Oculus Go. 
Even if you have a Samsung Galaxy-branded phone and were considering the Gear VR, the Oculus Go may be your best bet for mobile VR. That is because the Oculus Go is optimized for VR and doesn't have all the phone-related processes running in the background, bogging down the processor as it struggles to render your experience.
But the big drawback to VR is that it can be isolating. Unless you're playing a social-based or multiplayer game, you can feel alone in the experience. Fortunately, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive provide means for mirroring your adventures on an external display for friends and family to enjoy. Chromecast support now provides a similar shared experience for mobile headsets, and eventually, you can do the same with the new Oculus Go headset.  
At launch, there are more than 1,000 experiences available for the Oculus Go, part of which were already available for Gear VR owners. Oculus said developers have worked around the clock to update their Gear VR apps since this time last year so they run optimally on the Oculus Go. The platform also has many exclusives you simply can't play on the Gear VR.

Google Daydream View 2 vs. Oculus Go

Now that the Oculus Go mobile virtual reality headset is available to purchase, you definitely won't find a shortage of content typically associated with a new platform. That is because the device is compatible with apps already available for Samsung's smartphone-powered Gear VR, thus there are more than 1,000 titles available at launch to install and enjoy.
