Titanfall getting a free-to-play release on the PC, but it’s only coming out in Asia

Titanfall
While Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall was fairly successful, it was hampered by only launching on the Xbox One. It eventually came to the PC and Xbox 360, but still didn’t quite live up to the Call of Duty-killer hype that had been built up around it.

Still, Titanfall did well enough that a sequel in the works. Details on said sequel are few and far between, but in the meantime publisher EA has teamed up with Nexon on a free-to-play version of the game for the PC. The only catch? You’ve got to live in Asia to be able to play it.

Specifically, the free-to-play adaptation will be available in Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), according to Gamesindustry.biz.

“With its pilot vs. titan gameplay, among other innovations, Titanfall is a uniquely intense game experience,” Nexon President and CEO Owen Mahoney said. “We look forward to working with the talented teams at Respawn and EA and leveraging Nexon’s free-to-play expertise to deliver a new and engaging online game based on Titanfall to the Asian market.”

Though the game will be mostly developed by Nexon subsidiary Nexon GT, a spokesperson clarified that Respawn will be collaborating on the game’s development.

If the Nexon name sounds familiar, it’s because the company publishes a lot of free-to-play games. Maple Story might be the most popular, but the company also publishes its share of shooters, including the recently released Dirty Bomb and the upcoming shooter currently codenamed BlueStreak from Cliff Bleszinski’s Bosskey Studios.

Chances are good that this particular version of Titanfall won’t ever make its way to the U.S., so if you’re looking for more man-on-machine action, you’ll need to wait for the proper sequel. If you never got the chance to play the first game, you’ll have a better shot this time around since the sequel will likely be multiplatform.
