CES 2006 Profile: Akimbo

Video-on-demand company Akimbo made some news at CES 2006 with their announcements regarding a new co-branded Akimbo Player set top box with Thomson, as well as word that they’d signed broadband movie service Movielink to provide content to their subscribers.

The new RCA (a Thomson brand) Akimbo Player, which will be available in early spring for $199 with rebate, allows users to choose from and download over 8,000 titles via a broadband connection. This content is in addition to the Movielink movies which will be offered (non RCA branded Akimbo Player owners will also be able to access the Movielink content). Features of this set top box include Ethernet and dual USB ports and a hard disk that allows up to 150 hours of Akimbo programming to be stored.

It launched its ATH-TWX7, a new set of hi-res, noise-canceling wireless earbuds that fill a big gap in the company's product lineup. The ATH-TWX7 come in black, white, or grey colors and are available starting January 9, for $199.

The ATH-TWX7 share a lot in common with A-T's flagship ATH-TWX9, but at $199, the TWX7 are a lot more affordable than the $299 TWX9.

Netflix is doing something chaotic for 3 Body Problem at CES
Netflix at CES.

We've already gotten one surprise announcement at CES 2024 (that'd be LG's transparent OLED television) — get ready for another. And this one is coming from ... Netflix?

It's the perfect sort of teaser for CES because the Consumer Electronics Show is lousy with tech that never will see the light of day. And sometimes tech that's never meant to see the light of day. Or tech that shouldn't ever see the light of day. It's the sort of environment that's ripe for ridicule or dark satire.
