The Woodbourne identity: Polk Audio Announces Weighty-Yet-Wireless Table-Top Speaker

Polk Audio has been busy announcing new products lately, and it continues that trend with its latest announcement of the Woodbourne, the company’s first-ever table-top streaming speaker.

The Woodbourne has a casual-but-classy alabaster exterior, and is topped off with a mahogany wood veneer that would be right at home aside Ron Burgundy’s leather-bound books. The look was inspired by mid-twentieth century furniture and could be described as retro-but-flexible.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty: The speaker supports both Bluetooth (including the apt-X codec) and AirPlay, and can also operate on a wired connection. Under the hood, we find a built-in 180-Watt RMS amplifier, two 5 ¼-inch mid-woofers and two one-inch silk dome tweeters. Those are some pretty hefty drivers for a table-top and should be capable of cranking out some serious bass.

At 24 inches wide, 7 inches high, and 6 7/8 inches deep, it’s larger than your average table top, and at 17 pounds 8 ounces, it won’t exactly be a breeze to move around. Still, it looks like we’re getting more power here than you’d find with a typical table-top too, so we’re on board with the additional poundage.

Available in Q2 of 2013 for $600, this looks to be a serious, high-end offering. If it proves to be anything less, keep your money in your pocket.

Sonos’ new Era 100 and Era 300 wireless speakers go all-in on spatial audio and Bluetooth
Sonos Era 300 and Era 100 side by side.

Sonos has officially unveiled two new wireless smart speakers -- the $249 Sonos Era 100, and the $449 Sonos Era 300. While the Era 100 is effectively a new version of the aging Sonos One, which it replaces, the Era 300 is an entirely new type of speaker for the company, with six drivers (including an up-firing tweeter) and compatibility with spatial audio formats like Dolby Atmos.

The leaks pretty much nailed it. Both speakers will be available on March 28 in 26 countries including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, and Australia, with preorders beginning March 7.

Devialet managed to pack two subwoofers into a speaker the size of a small purse
Devialet Mania portable speaker.

French audio company, Devialet, has always attempted to create speakers that blend high style with high performance. Its latest creation, the $790 Devialet Mania, adds a new twist to that formula: portability. It comes in black, grey, and an available $990 Paris Opéra edition, which uses 24-carat "moongold" embellishments. All three are available to order from devialet.com.

Standing at under 6.7 inches tall, the spherical Mania is tiny -- just a fraction of an inch larger than a Google Pixel 7 Pro -- but inside, it packs four full-range drivers plus two subwoofers, which helps to explain why, despite being so small, it still weighs about five pounds. Also contributing to its weight is a built-in rechargeable battery that Devialet claims will power the Mania for up to 10 hours. It charges over USB-C, but you can also buy an optional $80 wireless charging base.
