Twitter’s live video app for NFL streams is now available on Android TV

Twitter is launching its live video app on Android TV just over two months since it debuted on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Xbox One. Those of you who actually like to tweet will have to get accustomed to spectating, as this application is all about video.

The app’s biggest draw remains its lineup of NFL Thursday Night Football games, with five of Twitter’s designated ten broadcasts left remaining. Consequently, Android TV viewers who download the app will be able to tune in to watch the New Orleans Saints take on the Carolina Panthers live on Thursday. You can check out the full schedule of Twitter’s NFL live-streams here.

The platform secured the social media rights to ten NFL games earlier this year for a reported $10 million. The first of those games was reportedly watched by an estimated 2.3 million global viewers on Twitter’s web and mobile outlets.

Best of all, you don’t even need a Twitter account to use the apps. Twitter claims that viewers will be able to watch the live-streams alongside tweets containing videos — an indication that it is hoping to entice viewers into signing up to its flagship platform with a taster of its core live tweeting experience.

Additional content available through the apps includes Twitter’s college sports live-streams provided by Pac-12 Networks and Campus Insiders. There’s also live Major League Baseball and NHL broadcasts, and Twitter’s exclusive pregame NBA shows.

For those seeking respite from the sports blitz, you can tune into live business news courtesy of Bloomberg, and Cheddar TV. Fans of viral web videos will also be able to catch the top clips from Twitter’s Periscope platform.

“These devices will bring Twitter’s live-streaming video experience to life on the TV screen,” said Anthony Noto, chief operating officer, Twitter, upon the apps’ launch in September. “Twitter has always been a great complement to TV, and now fans can enjoy even more premium video with live tweets and the best content on Twitter right from their TVs.”

You can download the app from the Google Play Store. Twitter seems to have messed up the screenshots provided, but rest assured this is the official video app and not the general Twitter app.

Google announced today that all Android TV and Google TV devices in the U.S. are getting more than 25 new free channels, baked right into the operating systems' Live tabs. That brings the total number of built-in FAST channels to more than 100, meaning that you'll be able to watch all kinds of free content without having to download a single thing. It's all built in.

FAST channels refer to free, ad-supported television and can be individual shows or entire channels of content. Google didn't immediately name the 25-plus channels, but said they include the BBC and Lionsgate. (You can see a big list of them here.) And that's on top of the others that were added in the spring, which brings a ridiculous 800 or so channels (more or less) to the platform. Whether they have what you want to watch? That's completely up to you. But it's free.

The Roku Channel — one of the major services in the FAST category — is now available as an app on Google TV and Android TV. That's a good thing because The Roku Channel says it already reaches an estimated 100 million people in U.S. households with its wealth of free movies and series.

But it's also still a step removed from competing services like the Paramount-owned Pluto TV, which has direct integration with the Google TV live listings and doesn't require a separate download. Still, it's more free content on a low-cost piece of hardware, and who doesn't like that? The Roku Channel sports more than 350 free live linear channels (as in everyone is watching the same thing at the same time), as well as movies and series, live news, and more.
