Behold the first-ever content series between Digital Trends and The Manual. The Bromance has begun. Since there are a plethora of brands out there melding style and technology, we thought we would take this opportunity to profile one item per week for the month of October, breaking them down and offering each of our unique takes on their tech and style components.

For the whole series, click here; for headphones that will look solid with your best “going out” kit while sounding even better, read on …

dt-logoDigital Trends:

You know what’s funny? How easily we’re marketed to. In this day and age, a celebrity endorsement can run rough shod over any sensible appraisal of an otherwise questionable product. Need an example? Headphones. With all due respect to Dr. Dre (seriously, Doctor? This is with respect. Please don’t hurt us), we’ve reached a point where every ninny from Snooki to Tim Tebow has slapped their name on a some cheap cans and apparently that’s more important to us than things like “high dynamic range” and “sound signature,” because we keep buying them.

You know who still cares about those kinds of things? Sennheiser. The company has been producing headphones since the late 40s and, at this point, makes headphones at nearly every price point that are as good or better than its competitors. We know; such exhaustive attention to detail in so many different products is very German of them.

So, if you’re looking for something that might make a professional sound engineer weep, we can point you toward something like the HD 800. If you’re looking for something that can go toe-to-toe with Dre’s best Beats, but looks classically dope instead of dopily plastic, we present the Momentum.

The ManualThe Manual:

Speaking of dope, what can kill a good looking, well planned outfit? Crappy looking candy colored cans over your ears. Dude, you aren’t in middle school anymore and matching the color of your headphones to your kicks is just redorkulous.

Men’s fashion has been looking rather woodsy as of late and the Sennheiser Momentum fit’s that feel to a ‘T,’ without being cheesy (just say no to faux wood grain anything, people). The premium brown leather ear pads and headband offer great style as well as breathability during your Mumford & Sons solo jam sessions and the handsome hard carrying case would look just as good carrying cufflinks (or a bottle of bourbon?) as these headphones. We don’t often call headphones ‘timeless’, but these Momentum’s are something a music nut might just pass down to his kids in the unlikely event that we are still using headphones in 30 years …

Jabra’s Elite 2 budget earbuds are real, but you can’t buy them yet
Jabra Elite 2 true wireless earbuds.

Last week, Jabra announced a trio of new true wireless earbuds under its Elite range, including the Elite 3, Elite 7 Pro, and Elite 7 Active. And while the Elite 3 were especially notable for their price -- at $79 they're the most affordable true wireless earbuds the company has ever released -- an even more affordable model is likely coming soon: The Jabra Elite 2. The company quietly launched the model at the same time as the other new Elite models, but it appears to be reserving the Elite 2 for non-U.S. markets like India, China, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Turkey for now.

"These are true wireless earbuds currently launched in select markets worldwide," a Jabra representative told Digital Trends. "They offer powerful sound with 6mm speakers, customizable EQ, and noise-isolating design. They also have 2 mics for clear calls with Alexa Built-in, one-touch Spotify playback, and Google Fast Pair for Android users."

I tried Apple’s Color Balance on two TVs and I can’t decide if I like it
Apple TV 4K color balancing

Last week, Apple took the wraps off the second generation of the Apple TV 4K. Among the streaming media device’s new features, which include a completely revamped Siri remote control, Apple showed off a clever color balance calibration tool that lets you optimize the look of your TV using just your iPhone’s front-facing camera.

This raised many questions in the TV-reviewing community. Why would you want to calibrate the output of a single device like the Apple TV 4K when calibrating the TV would result in better image quality for all video sources? How accurate is the iPhone’s camera when compared to pro calibration tools that can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars? And are the results as stark as Apple suggested in its launch video?
