Google Home adds Spanish speaking and listening capabilities

You can now speak Spanish with your Google Home device

Google’s smart assistant Google Home now speaks Spanish for all those who speak Español. After announcing in February that it would add 22 languages to the smart speaker’s linguistic capabilities, the company launched the new language in Spain last week. In an expected expansion, Google announced versions for markets in Mexico and the United States at a launch event in Mexico City on Tuesday, June 26.

All three speakers in the company’s current lineup — the Google Home, Google Home Mini, and Google Home Max — now speak and understand Spanish, potentially opening the products up to more than 400 million native speakers around the world, on top the millions who speak the language as a second language.

Tapping into the Spanish capabilities of the smart speaker, now available on store shelves in Mexico, is a snap. Simply launch the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet, tap Devices from the left-hand menu, and select “Assistant language.” From there, you can choose from Spanish variants designated for Spain, Mexico, and the United States.

Later this year, Google Home’s language selection should be even easier. Starting with English, German, and French, Google says its smart assistant will be able to understand multiple languages without requiring users to switch settings. Potentially, users will be able to trigger a Spanish-speaking Google Home simply by asking, “Google, do you speak Spanish?” or even, “Google, habla Español?”

It is an apt time for Google to release the new linguistic ability as Spain faces Russia in the men’s World Cup on Sunday, July 1, and Mexico faces Sweden on Wednesday, June 27. Fans can get to know more about the World Cup by asking, “OK, Google, cuándo juega México?” or cheer for their home team with “OK, Google, dame un cántico de fútbol”.

Naturally, the Spanish commands also extend to smart home devices. Users can listen to music by telling the speaker, “OK, Google, reproducir mi lista de reproducción para hacer ejercicio,” or cool things down on an Internet of Things-powered thermostat by asking, “OK, Google, sube la temperatura del termostato.” Users can even celebrate their birthdays by saying, “OK, Google, cantamé Las Mañanitas.”

Google Home is one of the best smart platforms on the market. With support for thousands of devices, easy setup, and a powerful mobile app to run the show, it’s an intuitive option for most shoppers. But what if you don’t want to use your smartphone to operate your smart home network? What if you prefer using your PC? While Google Home does not yet have dedicated PC software, it does offer a Google Home web application. It’s a bit limited in scope, but it can handle most of the basic tasks with ease.

Interested in checking out Google Home on PC? Here’s a look at how it works, along with some of its limitations and other workarounds.
Can you use the Google Home app on a PC?
Google Home doesn't have a PC app, but it does have a website. Unfortunately, Google notes that Google Home for web is in Public Preview, meaning not all features are available, and you may encounter glitches during use. The website is seeing constant updates, so there's a good chance it'll work just as well as the mobile apps in the future. Be sure to check it out regularly to see what's been added.

Google Home adds new camera features and support for Nest Cam Outdoor
The interface on Google Home allowing you to capture custom clips.

Google Home is one of the best smart home platforms, and it's just gotten more exciting with the rollout of new camera features and support for the Nest Cam Outdoor. These updates are currently limited to Public Preview users, though we expect to see them launched to all users soon.

One of the biggest additions is support for the first-generation Nest Cam Outdoor. Google will be rolling out eligibility to users over the next few weeks -- so if you're a Public Preview user and don't have access right away, you may have to wait a bit longer. Once the feature has been pushed to your camera, you can use it like you would any other device in Google Home. This includes having access to an updated camera history interface.

Google Home is continuing to expand its roster, with Google today adding support for the Nest Cam Indoor (1st Gen). This allows you to manage all aspects of your camera, such as checking your notification history and accessing your camera feed.

There’s a bit of a catch, as support for Nest Cam Indoor is only available in Public Preview. To join Public Preview and gain early access to the feature, you’ll need to dive into the Settings on your Home app and select Join Public Preview. You’ll then get a prompt to update Public Preview -- accept this invitation, and you’ll see another prompt letting you know when you’re eligible to transfer your camera to Google Home.
