Smartphones were the wedge between Ballmer and Gates

Microsoft's Former CEO Says Disagreement With Gates on Smartphones Drove Them Apart
Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has never been one to shy away from expressing his opinions. His demeanor on (and off) the Redmond campus has long been marked with passionate outbursts. And so when he expressed his enthusiasm about getting into the hardware space, Bill Gates and the Microsoft board weren’t exactly on the same page. According to Fortune, this was a contributing factor to the two tech legends drifting apart in the early 2010’s.

In the article, Ballmer indicates there was a “fundamental disagreement” about “how important it was to be in the hardware business,” specifically phones. “I had pushed Surface. The board had been a little reluctant in supporting it. And then things came to a climax around what to do about the phone business.”

Bloomberg adds that Ballmer’s only regret was not moving into the space sooner.

“I would have moved into the hardware business faster and recognized that what we had in the PC, where there was a separation of chips, systems and software, wasn’t largely gonna reproduce itself in the mobile world,” he said to Bloomberg.

As history now records, Microsoft did get into the phone and tablet side of things, albeit a little too late to take a forceful position in the market. Their first tablet, the Surface RT, rolled out four years ago and didn’t do too well — Redmond had to take a $900 million write down, which never looks good to stockholders. Ballmer pushed for the eventual $9.5 billion dollar purchase of Nokia Oyj’s handset unit, and most of the entire value of that deal required a write down. Again, not a great sign for Microsoft.

Ballmer left Microsoft two years ago after a 14 year run, and now owns the NBA Los Angeles Clippers. Presumably, there are no iPads or iPhones in the Clippers locker room.

Apps on the Apple Watch Series 9's screen.

I’m just going to come out and say it: I love the Apple Watch Series 9. A couple of weeks ago, I returned to wearing it every day after an extended period of not doing so. And you know what? I was surprised by how much I’d missed it.

But one thing has bothered me this time around: There's a feature I haven't been using. Not because it’s bad, but because I tend to forget it's there.

OnePlus 12R Genshin Impact Edition in hand.

OnePlus is still quite new to me, as I was a lifelong iPhone user until I joined Digital Trends. However, OnePlus has a pretty solid reputation in the mobile world, and now I can see why, as the OnePlus 12 is one of my favorite smartphones that I’ve used so far this year.

But the OnePlus 12 isn’t the only phone that OnePlus launched in 2024. There is also the more affordable value option, the OnePlus 12R, which even comes in a cool Genshin Impact Edition.
