Is the Pixel 5a canceled? Google says it’s coming ‘later this year’

It’s been quite a day of news for the not-even-released Google Pixel 5a. Earlier today, Twitter leaker Jon Prosser claimed that a source had told him that the not-yet-announced Google Pixel 5a had been canceled. It seems as though that’s not the whole story. Google offered a statement to Android Police saying otherwise. Originally, Google was said to have canceled the device due in part to the ongoing global chip shortage.

“Pixel 5a 5G is not cancelled. It will be available later this year in the U.S. and Japan and announced in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced,” said Google in its statement.

Now, there’s a lot of room for interpretation here. For starters, the fact that Google only notes availability in the U.S. and Japan means that the global chip shortage may have still had an impact on production of the Google Pixel 5a. Also, Google released a Pixel 4a and a Pixel 4a 5G, and noting that the “Pixel 5a 5G” has not been canceled could suggest that a possible Pixel 5a has been canceled. We will likely never know if there would have been a standard Pixel 5a.

It’s good that at least some variant of a Pixel 5a will be released, even if the release will be very limited. The Google Pixel 3a and 4a have been among the best phones of their times in their price ranges. The Pixel 4a has faced increased competition recently, namely from devices like those in the Samsung Galaxy A series, so the Pixel a series is due for a refresh.

Google has confirmed that its annual developer conference, Google I/O, will go ahead virtually from May 18 to May 20. It’s possible, and even likely, that the Pixel 5a 5G will be announced at the event, given the time-frame.

Generally, the budget-minded “a” models of the Pixel series have offered a ton for their price. The Pixel 4a boasts solid processing power, an excellent camera, and the stripped-back software experience that users know and love, all at around $350. The Pixel 4a 5G steps things up with a better processor and more versatile camera. It’s currently unclear how much the Pixel 5a 5G will cost, but if it comes in at around $400, it could end up being one of the best phones for the price this year.

Google is also gearing up for the release of the Pixel 6 in the fall. The Pixel 6 will reportedly be the first Google device to ship with a Google-designed processor, marking a big step for a company that has previously relied on Qualcomm silicon for its phones. It’s currently unclear if the chip shortage will affect the availability of the Pixel 6 as well.

Don’t buy the Pixel Tablet; get this cheaper Android tablet instead
OnePlus Pad with official Stylo pencil stylus on a wooden table.

The market for Android tablets appears to be sinking, but the likes of the Pixel Tablet may have some role in salvaging it. The Pixel Tablet, launched last week -- exactly a year after it was first unveiled -- marks Google's reentry into the tablet segment after almost a decade.

While this development may help bring more manufacturers onto the scene, Google itself feels shy about making big claims about performance and productivity. Instead, the Pixel Tablet is projected as a mere hybrid upgrade to the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max.

I really like the Pixel 7a, but there’s one big issue I can’t ignore
Google Pixel 7a laying on ground

Google revealed the Pixel 7a at Google I/O 2023, and it is available for purchase right now for $499. It’s the cheapest of the Pixel 7 lineup, and it packs in the Google Tensor G2 chip, a crisp display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 64MP main shooter, plus it’s the first Pixel A-series with wireless charging. The Pixel 7a even comes in four fun colors: Charcoal, Snow, Sea, and the Google Store-exclusive Coral.

But with all of those upgrades from its predecessor, the Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7a is $50 more than the original price of the Pixel 6a, which was $449 at launch. However, Google also decided to keep the Pixel 6a around (this is the first time the previous model has remained for sale) and even gave it a $100 price cut, so it is now just $349.

I’m excited for the Google Pixel Fold, and you should be too
Side view of the Pixel Fold

It’s official: the Google Pixel Fold is coming. After months of rumors and speculation, Google revealed the Pixel Fold on Star Wars Day, of all days. With the tagline “May The Fold Be With You,” Google dropped a tweet that showed off the Pixel Fold in all of its glory. And now, after the official announcement at Google I/O 2023, the Google Pixel Fold is shaping up to be one of the more exciting releases this year.

I’ve always been an iPhone gal, but since I joined Digital Trends, I’ve been checking out Android phones more than ever before. I’ve taken quite a liking to the Pixel lineup of devices, including the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a, which also just dropped today. But the Google Pixel Fold is the one device I can’t wait to get my hands on, especially when compared to the competing Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is likely coming this year too).
It looks like the perfect compact size
