The Honor Magic V — foldable rival to the Fold 3 — finally gets a launch date

After freeing itself from Huawei’s shackles, things seem to be looking great for Honor. The company launched several promising smartphones in 2021, including the Honor 60 series, the Honor 50 series, and the Honor Magic 3 lineup — and seems to have much bigger plans for 2022. These plans also include their first-ever foldable smartphone – the Honor Magic V – which has finally received its official launch date.

In late December 2021, the company teased the Honor Magic V for the first time with a slick-looking video (embedded below) on its social media accounts. Today, Honor Global tweeted out a message that confirms that their first-ever foldable smartphone will be formally unveiled on January 10. The event, unsurprisingly, will be held in China and will be livestreamed across the globe starting at 6:30 am ET.

What are we expecting?

So far, Honor has done a pretty good job of keeping the juicy bits surrounding the Magic V under wraps. Apart from a rough idea about the phone’s appearance, we do not really know much about Honor’s first foldable phone.

From the video (above), it is evident that the phone shares its design with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. The accompanying image with today’s announcement does confirm that the phone has a triple rear camera array and a centrally placed hole punch cutout for the selfie camera on the external display.

Initially, there were rumors that the Honor Magic V could derive heavily from Huawei’s own Mate X2 showcased last year. In fact, there were also reports about the likelihood of it being a rebranded Huawei X2 with some improvements and Google Services support thrown in. Looking at the fresh images, however, we can almost certainly rule out that possibility.

Rumor has it that the Honor Magic V could feature an 8-inch foldable display and an external display that measures 6-inches across. The foldable display will be reportedly sourced via Chinese display-major BOE. Chances are high the Honor Magic V will use Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip — the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

I held 4 of the latest folding phones, and I learned something important

When shopping for a big-screen foldable today, there’s an increasing risk of becoming hyperfocused on the device's dimensions. For a while, these devices have been fairly big and bulky compared to non-folding phones. Now, Honor is making a big deal out of its very thin new Magic V3 folding smartphone, which will rightly turn quite a few heads with its sleek look. Comparatively, a few months ago, Samsung made fractions of a millimeter and a few grams of weight reduction sound like an impressive step forward on the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

However, having held them both together, along with a few other foldables, I’m not sure these numbers made any of them better than the other at all. Instead, what I learned was much more enlightening.

The Honor Magic V3 is the folding phone I’ve been waiting for
honor magic v3 is the folding phone ive been waiting for hands on 15

After not using that many folding phones in 2023, I’ve ended up using a lot of them in 2024. I tested the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 earlier this summer, have been checking out the OnePlus Open, and most recently spent a couple of days with the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. There’s been a lot to like about all of them, but there’s been one other folding phone that’s stuck out to me more — and it’s not one I expected at all.

I’m talking about the Honor Magic V3. It’s Honor’s third major folding phone in this form factor (hence the V3 name), but it’s the first one I’ve ever used. And as much as I like this year’s foldables from Samsung, OnePlus, and Google, Honor’s feels like something truly special.

The foldable phone market is currently dominated by Samsung, particularly with its recent Galaxy Z Fold 6 release. However, another player is entering the scene next month. Honor is expected to launch its latest foldable device before IFA Berlin in September.

On a teaser page for its attendance at the annual European tech event, Honor has displayed a large banner with the slogan “AI unfold your magic,” along with the names “Honor Magic V3,” “Honor MagicPad2,” and “Honor MagicBook Art 14.” The first refers to the company’s latest foldable phone, launched in China in July as a successor to the Honor Magic V2. Honor launched the Magic V3 in China earlier this year, but IFA is where we should see the phone get a global release.
