Apple iPad Pro with wireless charging, Air 5, and new iPad all rumored for 2022

After launching the iPhone 13 series, new iPad Air, iPad, and MacBook Pro, Apple seems to be looking to continue the momentum in 2022. The company is preparing to launch three new iPad models across the lineup next year. It could announce a new entry-level iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro, says Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

We don’t have a ton of details yet, but according to the report, Apple is planning to release a new iPad Pro with wireless charging next year. A new entry-level iPad and iPad Air could tag along.

Apple updated the base model iPad earlier this year, adding an A13 chip, a 12-megapixel ultrawide front camera with Center Stage for video calls (a feature that is missing on the iPad Air 4), and True Tone. In the past few years, the company has only updated its entry-level iPad with minor specifications and chip upgrades to keep the cost relatively low at $329. The new iPad for 2022 could have a slimmer profile and a larger display, and it’s likely to remain around the same price point.

As for the next-gen iPad Air, it’ll probably come with features on par with the latest iPad Mini, which features the A15 Bionic chipset, Center Stage for video calls, and a wide-angle selfie camera. Earlier, the device was tipped to have a Samsung OLED display, but it is now said that the iPad Air 5 could stick with an LCD. The iPad Air 4 was launched in September 2020, so it’s already overdue for an update.

We don’t have a release date confirmed for the new iPad models yet, but we expect them to get staggered launches over the course of next year, with the first set of products likely to come in the summer and then in the fall, alongside the iPhone 14.

Apple’s new iPad Air could be in trouble

If everything goes according to plan, Apple is set to unveil new iPads on Tuesday, May 7. It's been a while since the last iPad release in October 2022, so expectations are incredibly high for those eagerly waiting to buy a new Apple tablet.

I typically purchase the iPad Pro and own the current 11-inch model, and I am curious about Apple's plans for this product line. However, most people are probably more interested in the upcoming iPad Air lineup in 2024. Both lineups are getting a refresh next week. In recent years, the iPad Air has been positioned between the budget-priced iPad and the top-of-the-line iPad Pro, making it a popular choice for many.

No, we weren’t expecting this with the revamped iPad Pro

The refreshed iPad Pro that’s expected to be unveiled during a special online event on May 7 could come with Apple’s M4 chip, prominent Apple tipster Mark Gurman claimed in the latest edition of his tech-focused Power On newsletter, which he shared on Sunday.

The news comes as a big surprise as everyone had been expecting a routine upgrade to Apple’s current silicon, the M3, from the existing iPad Pro's M2 chip.

Apple is about to do the unthinkable to its iPads

Earlier today, Apple announced that new iPads are coming this May. In my eyes, this seems to be “The Chosen One” generation. We’re likely getting an OLED display, a better keyboard (hopefully), and a chip ready to chomp the AI dinner. This gadget shall finally fill the techno-digital void in my life. At last.

Or maybe I am just trying to blindly convince myself to splurge over a thousand dollars for a machine that is “still not a Mac” and “can never be a fully fleshed out workstation.” But hey, people are spending $3,500 on a headset that gives them a headache and $700 for an AI thingamajig that can’t quite figure out what it really wants to do.
