The accessory every iPhone 6 Plus user needs: A thumb extender!

It’s no secret that the iPhone 6 Plus is big. A lot of people are complaining about how awkward it is to stretch their fingers across the massive display, but luckily, a Tokyo company called Thanko has come up with a solution. The company calls its latest accessory a “finger stylus,” but what it really is, is a thumb extender.

Never again will those with small thumbs be forced to strain their digits to flip through home screens, tap an app, or reach the Notification Center. Thanko’s finger stylus is a flesh-colored silicon thimble with a black strip inside that pokes out at the top. At first glance, it looks like something you’d pick up for your 5-year-old cousin at the dollar store, or one of those fake witch fingers they used to hand out during Halloween.

Still, no matter how ridiculous it looks, it appears to work. The video below shows the finger stylus in action on different smartphone screens. It extends your thumb up to 0.6 inches, so stretching is no longer required for those hard to reach parts of the screen. Better yet, this must-have iPhone 6 Plus accessory costs just $14.  It’s unclear whether the finger stylus is available outside of Japan, but it’s clearly a bargain.

After all, as Mastercard would say: Thumb extender? $14. True reachability on your iPhone 6 Plus? Priceless.

This is what an iPhone looks like after a year with no screen protector
Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 14 Pro, with light to show scratches.

Apple says its Ceramic Shield glass over the iPhone’s screen is “tougher than any smartphone glass,” but how accurate is this statement? The Digital Trends Mobile team has each been using one of the iPhone 14 series models for the last year and two of us haven’t put a separate screen protector on, while the third member of the team has. Here’s how the screens have held up — and what we think about Ceramic Shield.

Ceramic Shield was first introduced by Apple on the iPhone 12, and it claimed it went “beyond glass by adding a new high-temperature crystallization step that grows nano-ceramic crystals within the glass matrix, increasing drop performance by 4x.” Apple worked with Corning, the same company that makes Gorilla Glass, which is used on many smartphones from other manufacturers, to produce Ceramic Shield. It’s found on all iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and now all iPhone 15 models.
