Tough K50S and K40S phones are just a taste of what’s coming soon from LG

LG has announced two new smartphones ahead of the IFA 2019 technology show at the beginning of September — the K50S and K40S. While there are interesting aspects to the two phones, we are also expecting LG to launch something much more exciting at the show itself.

Designed for multimedia according to LG, the K50S and K40S are also notable for the MIL-STD-810G toughness rating, making them able to stand up to some relatively harsh treatment, at least compared to flagships made of glass.

What about the rest of the specification? Let’s take a closer look.

The K50S has a triple lens camera mounted horizontally on the back, made up of a main 13-megapixel camera, a second 5-megapixel super wide angle camera, and a third 2-megapixel depth sensing camera. It’s the first K-Series LG phone to have a wide-angle camera. On the front is a 13-megapixel selfie camera. It’s hidden inside a droplet-style notch that’s very effectively disguised by the wallpaper in the press photos. It’s set inside a 6.5-inch screen with an HD+ resolution. There are small bezels around the edge of the screen, too.

Security is handled by a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, Android 9.0 Pie is installed, and there’s a sizable 4,000mAh battery inside. Other features include DTS:X 3D sound, a MicroSD card slot, and 32GB of internal storage space. LG has not revealed which processor runs the K50S, but does state it has a 2.0Ghz clock speed and that the phone has 3GB of RAM.

LG has apparently used the same processor as the K50S in the K40S, and it comes with either 3GB or 2GB of RAM, depending on where the phone is purchased. It also has the rear fingerprint sensor, Android 9.0 Pie, the 13-megapixel selfie camera, and 32GB of storage space seen on the K50S.

The screen is smaller though, at 6.1 inches, and the rear camera has lost the 2-megapixel depth-sensing lens. The good news is the 5-megapixel wide-angle lens remains, along with the 13-megapixel main camera. The battery is smaller with a 3,500mAh capacity. It will be sold in aurora black or Moroccan blue, the same color options available for the K50S.

The two K-Series phones will be sold in Europe, Asia, and Latin America from October, with prices to be announced locally. Will this be it for LG at IFA? No, there’s a great chance it has something much more exciting to show in Berlin next month — a dual-screen smartphone. We’ll be at the show to bring you all the details.

I keep forgetting about the Apple Watch Series 9’s coolest feature
Apps on the Apple Watch Series 9's screen.

I’m just going to come out and say it: I love the Apple Watch Series 9. A couple of weeks ago, I returned to wearing it every day after an extended period of not doing so. And you know what? I was surprised by how much I’d missed it.

But one thing has bothered me this time around: There's a feature I haven't been using. Not because it’s bad, but because I tend to forget it's there.

OnePlus 12R Genshin Impact Edition in hand.

OnePlus is still quite new to me, as I was a lifelong iPhone user until I joined Digital Trends. However, OnePlus has a pretty solid reputation in the mobile world, and now I can see why, as the OnePlus 12 is one of my favorite smartphones that I’ve used so far this year.

But the OnePlus 12 isn’t the only phone that OnePlus launched in 2024. There is also the more affordable value option, the OnePlus 12R, which even comes in a cool Genshin Impact Edition.
