Lyft may soon let you book rides up to 24 hours in advance

The likes of Uber and Lyft have largely avoided allowing customers to book rides in advance, saying that it wouldn’t fall in line with the idea of on-demand rides. Lyft, however, seems to be changing its tone — the company has announced that it is testing a feature that allows users to book a ride up to 24 hours in advance, according to a report from the Financial Times.

The new feature is currently only available in San Francisco and is limited to Lyft employees. However, assuming the tests go well, it’s likely that the feature will expand to other areas over time. The feature certainly represents an interesting change for ride-sharing services. It also represents another dig into more traditional taxi and limo companies — previously, you’ve only been able to book rides in advance through a taxi service.

There is a reason that Uber and Lyft haven’t offered prebooked rides to date — the companies are worried that instead of responding to requests, drivers will circle neighborhoods waiting for scheduled riders. That’s largely why Lyft is restricting the feature to its employees — so it can learn how drivers react to the feature and whether or not it has a significant impact on customers being able to get on-demand rides.

Of course, the new feature also puts Lyft in an interesting position against Uber — from a customer perspective, being able to schedule rides is a big deal, and it could even cause Uber customers to move toward Lyft instead.

The feature will be particularly useful for those booking trips — you won’t have to worry about getting a ride from the airport to your hotel, just book it in advance and there shouldn’t be a problem.

If you’re considering traveling abroad, you’ve probably wondered how to save money on roaming costs. Carriers — both in the U.S. and abroad — are notorious for charging a considerable amount of money to use your phone in a foreign country, and this can quickly double, or even triple, your monthly phone bill.

For many years, the solution was simple:When traveling abroad, ensure you have an unlocked phone and buy a local SIM card when you arrive. This worked well in theory, and aside from problems with carriers locking handsets — which still exist now — it was the best way to travel.

WhatsApp will soon save you from the horrors of missed texts
Reminders feature in WhatsApp.

Just over a month ago, WhatsApp introduced a new feature that would occasionally nudge users about status story updates from their contacts list. Now, the company has made a subtle change to it and added messages into the fold, as well.

The feature, which is currently rolling out in the test channel with the v2.24.25.29 build on Android, was first spotted by update tracker WABetaInfo. DigitalTrends can confirm that the feature is now live in the latest beta version available via the Google Play Store.

The One UI 7 beta fixes one of my biggest annoyances with Samsung phones
The vertical app drawer in One UI 7.

Sometimes, it feels like we're living in the future. We have self-driving cars, humanoid robots, and tiny computers on our wrists. Now, you can add vertical app drawers on Samsung phones to that list.

Samsung recently rolled out the One UI 7 beta to the Galaxy S24 lineup. Included in that update — something that wasn't mentioned in any press release or leak leading up to the beta's release — is a massive change to how the app drawer works.
