Everything we know about the OnePlus 5G phone

OnePlus will show off a prototype of its 5G phone at MWC

In addition to using the Snapdragon 855 processor in a 2019 phone, OnePlus will also produce a 5G smartphone to go along with a 4G LTE model. News of a network partnership in the U.K. was also revealed, showing how much emphasis OnePlus is putting on the new network technology.

Not only that, but we might be able to see the phone in its initial stages earlier than we previously thought — OnePlus has said that it’ll be showing off a prototype of the OnePlus 5G phone. The prototype will be shown off at an event called “Connect with the OnePlus Community over 5G,” and attendees of the event will be able to “experience the capabilities of 5G gaming.” The event will take place on February 26 at Mobile World Congress Barcelona.

The OnePlus and EE 5G Project

Release date and availability

At Mobile World Congress in Shanghai earlier this year, OnePlus CEO and founder Pete Lau said it’s thanks to the company’s relationship with Qualcomm that OnePlus is shaping up to become one of the first 5G mobile phone makers. Lau said the release will align with the first year 5G will be available in the U.S., and he’s also confident it will be the first to sell a 5G-capable phone in Europe, through a partnership with the U.K. carrier EE. A previous statement from OnePlus stated the handset would be available in early 2019, and that’s since been narrowed down to May 2019 by Lau (speaking to Cnet).

Price

Expect to pay more money than usual for the privilege of owning a 5G OnePlus phone. Lau estimated it will cost between $200 and $300 more than the 4G model, in an interview with TechRadar, which means it’s likely to cost around $750 to $850.

OnePlus is known to offer flagship specifications at a lower price tag. The OnePlus 6T starts at $550 and is powered by the Snapdragon 845 — the same chipset that powers the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Google Pixel 3, phones that initially cost more than $720.

Name

The name of the 5G phone may not be the OnePlus 7, which may only be used for the 4G phone, as OnePlus will adopt a new name for its 5G phones. It’ll be a separate range of devices, due before the end of May 2019, and will be only the second time in the company’s history it will sell more than one family of phones. The last was the short-lived OnePlus X, which existed alongside the OnePlus 2. We’ll keep you updated with more OnePlus 5G phone news here.

OnePlus’ Snapdragon 855 snafu

What started off as good news for OnePlus from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii has taken a turn for the less inspiring, after comments were clarified and some further 5G news revealed. On stage at the event, Lau was quoted as saying it would be the first manufacturer to launch a smartphone with the new Snapdragon 855 inside. However, it has been clarified that this was a translation error, and should have been “among the first.”

Samsung has for the last few years been first to use the latest flagship Snapdragon processor in a new device, so OnePlus’ announcement broke tradition, and could have been seen as a big deal for upstart OnePlus. The new Snapdragon chip is not only more powerful, but also places an emphasis on improved A.I. processing, better camera processing, and more. Now, in light of the clarification, it appears OnePlus’ news is no different from other manufacturers in 2019, in that it will use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 at some point.

How did this happen? Translations may be to blame, and the error may have run throughout various pieces of documentation used by OnePlus and Lau at the event, meaning the “we will be the first,” statement has been used several times. A OnePlus spokesperson issued a statement to Engadget, saying, “We appreciate the opportunity to clarify that we will be one of the first to have access to, and use, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, and apologize for the miscommunication.”

The miscommunication even extended to OnePlus’s Twitter account, where the surprise announcement was highlighted in a message.

Have T-Mobile? Your 5G service is about to get much faster

T-Mobile’s 5G network already offers unmatched 5G speeds and coverage throughout the U.S., with 98% of the population covered by some flavor of T-Mobile’s 5G and more than 90% benefiting from its higher-speed 5G Ultra Capacity (5G UC) network.

That translates to the “Uncarrier” taking first place in 5G performance in 46 U.S. states. However, T-Mobile isn’t content to sit at 90% coverage. It’s been working steadily to increase the footprint of its 5G UC network to reach even further, and is bringing those top speeds to areas previously served only by its lower-frequency 5G Extended Range network.

I performed an intense gaming test with the OnePlus 12. Here’s what happened

OnePlus has traditionally appealed to a very demanding set of users. Its "Never Settle" ethos appealed to early adopters of OnePlus phones looking to accomplish more than they can on traditional flagship phones at a much lower price. After a few years off track, OnePlus' latest flagship phone -- the OnePlus 12 -- feels like an ideal representation of its founding principles.

From a radiant display to superfast wired and wireless charging, the OnePlus 12 has many compelling features. Areas that I feel deserves the most attention are its gaming performance and brilliant value, even compared to other $800 phones.

Your next phone could get a huge 5G upgrade, thanks to AI

It’s that time of year again when Qualcomm ushers in its next generation of 5G modem technology. Announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC ) 2024, this year’s Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF system is the successor to last year’s Snapdragon X75, and it builds on the 5G Advanced foundation laid last year with more raw power and new AI features.

While the Snapdragon X75 moved the needle by adding support for the latest 5G Advanced standards, we’re still in that fourth phase of 5G technology, otherwise known as 3GPP Release 18 — and most carrier networks are still catching up. So, with no new standards to embrace, Qualcomm has focused on improving the inside of the Snapdragon X80 to take even fuller advantage of these cutting-edge 5G technologies.
