A super selfie cam, slim bezels, and a massive screen: the Xperia C5 Ultra’s right on trend

Sony has announced a new smartphone, the Xperia C5 Ultra, and while a super selfie camera may immediately grab attention, it’s the incredibly slim bezels around the massive screen that will draw you in. The phone was the subject of a few leaks, when the screen size was said only to be 5.5-inches or possibly larger. It turns out Sony has done the Ultra name proud, and fitted a whopping 6-inch screen to the front of its new phone.

The 1080p resolution means it should look great, plus it has Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 for improved colors and contrast. The bezels, at least based on the pictures released by Sony, look very slim indeed. The proof comes when we examine the dimensions. The Xperia C5 Ultra is 79mm across, a single millimeter more than the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It’s slightly longer at 164mm (the Note 4 is 153mm), and a tiny bit slimmer at 8.2mm. For the size of the display, it’s a very compact phone.

Sony has decided not to mess around with different cameras on the front and rear of the phone either. There’s a 13-megapixel on the front, and a 13-megapixel on the back, and they both come with a flash unit. This is a step beyond the Xperia C4, Sony’s other selfie-centric device. The selfie cam has an HDR mode, and an automatic scene recognition system makes sure the pictures look their best. All this is added to a 22mm wide-angle lens, and the soft-focus LED flash is specifically designed for close-quarters use.

A MediaTek MT6752 octa-core processor running at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM provides the power, and there’s 16GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot. Sony will produce a 4G LTE version, and one with dual-SIM support, plus it has all the usual connectivity options including Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC. The 2930mAh battery is supposed to be good for two-days, and there’s Sony’s Stamina mode to extend it beyond this, if you’re willing to cut down on functionality.

The price hasn’t been announced, but the Xperia C5 Ultra will be on sale in August, but only in selected countries, and Sony doesn’t specify which ones yet.

CONTINUE TO PAGE TWO FOR ALL THE RUMORS LEADING UP TO THE XPERIA C5 ULTRA’S ANNOUNCEMENT

The Xperia C5 Ultra is the latest smartphone rumored for launch from Sony in the near future, and it may have two of the most desirable features around at the moment — an almost bezel-less screen, and a super special selfie camera. Here’s everything we think we know about the phone so far.

Previously leaked under the codename Lavender, the phone has since broken cover as the Xperia C5 Ultra, after what could be a user manual for the phone was published online. The user guide shows a render of the phone, and reveals some of its possible specifications.

The images show a Sony device with a very similar design to phones such as the Xperia Z3+, and the Xperia C4 — to which the C5 Ultra could be related. The screen appears to stretch from one side to the other, and a graphic overlaying the picture indicates the entire space will be usable.

Above the screen, a large camera lens sits next to what could be an LED flash. There’s no word on the front camera resolution, although if the C5 Ultra is anything like the C4, then it will have 5 megapixels. The C4 also has an LED flash on the front panel. The bezel-free screen may measure 5.5-inches or larger, and have a 1080p resolution, which is identical to the C4.

Further possible specs included in the user guide include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a MicroSD card slot. In previous leaks, the possibility of a MediaTek octa-core processor and a 13-megapixel rear camera have also been suggested. Android 5.0 Lollipop is expected to be the operating system.

The Xperia C5 Ultra isn’t official yet, and all of the rumored information may not end up being accurate, plus there’s no way to know for sure the leaked manual is genuine. So far, there have been no leaks regarding when or if the C5 Ultra will make its debut, but we’ll keep you updated here with all further news.
