AppleTV+ reveals Spirited, Luck, Argylle and other movies

AppleTV+ may not have the subscriber count of its larger rivals, but it’s coming out swinging with an ambitious slate of original programming. During today’s Apple’s Peek Performance spring event, viewers were treated to a sizzle reel of several upcoming projects that are exclusively coming to AppleTV+. And no one can say that Apple didn’t line up some very big names!

One of the most impressive new projects is Luck, an animated feature from Skydance Animation that seems to have captured the flavor of Pixar’s early films. Eva Noblezada stars as Sam, a young woman who may be the unluckiest person in the entire world. After finding a literal lucky penny, Sam discovers that she has been transported to the Land of Luck, which is populated by talking magical creatures as voiced by Jane Fond, Lil Rel Howery, Whoopi Goldberg, Simon Pegg, and John Ratzenberger. It will debut on AppleTV+ on August 5.

Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell will headline Spirited, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Reynolds is Ebenezer Scrooge in this film, while Ferrell is the Ghost of Christmas Present. Sunita Mani will be the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Octavia Spencer, Aimee Carrero, Joe Tippett, Marlow Barkley, and Jen Tullock round out the cast. This film doesn’t currently have a date, but we’d be willing to bet on a holiday 2022 release.

Director Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller, Argylle, was also shown. Henry Cavill headlines the film as a spy who has been brainwashed into believing that he is a best-selling spy novelist. And as his memories return, he will encounter several familiar faces as played by Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Rob Delaney. There’s no date attached at the moment, but this looks like a possible franchise for AppleTV+.

Finally, director Cooper Raiff’s Sundance hit, Cha Cha Real Smooth, is coming to AppleTV+ on June 17. Raiff also stars in the film as Andrew, alongside Dakota Johnson as Domino, Leslie Mann as Andrew’s Mom, Brad Garrett as Stepdad Greg, Raúl Castillo as Joseph, Odeya Rush as Macy, Kelly O’Sullivan as Bella, Vanessa Burghardt as Lola, Evan Assante as David, Colton Osorio as Rodrigo, and Liam Jones as Jordan.

There’s a lot of star power between those four films. And we suspect that AppleTV+ is just getting started.

Walter Scobell in Percy Jackson.

Months before the show's second season is set to debut, Disney has confirmed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be back for a third season. The show, which is adapted from a series of popular YA novels by Rick Riordan, will be adapting the third novel in the series, The Titan's Curse. Disney also confirmed that the show's second season will debut in December, almost exactly two years after the first season debuted in 2023.

"We're so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+. This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time," Riordan said in a statement. "It's a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!"

Netflix has some potential hits on tap this month. The streamer is letting John Mulaney host a late-night show, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney. The comedian had a successful tryout last year with John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA. Super producer Shonda Rhimes is back with her latest show, The Residence, a whodunit set in the White House. When Rhimes puts a show on Netflix, it becomes a hit, i.e., Bridgerton.
March's new shows will be all over the most popular list. Below are three underrated shows to stream in March. Our picks include a prison thriller, a teen sitcom, and a sports drama.

Prison Break (2005-2017)
Prison Break - Season 1 Trailer
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess the plot of a show named Prison Break. There's an escape attempt from jail, but the details before and after the break make this crime drama extremely entertaining. After being wrongfully accused of murder, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is sent to Death Row. Lincoln's brother, Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), devises a plan to save his brother.
Michael's plan does not involve the legal system. Michael commits a crime and gets incarcerated at the same prison as Lincoln. With the two brothers under the same roof, they plan their escape. The more the brothers explore the case, the more they learn about the conspiracy to frame Lincoln. With a Prison Break reboot set in the same universe in development, there's no better time to start a rewatch than now.

Dwayne Johnson stars as Spencer Strasmore, a former NFL player forced into an early retirement due to an injury. Needing a second act, Spencer begins working as a financial manager for current NFL players.

three pbs shows you should watch in march 2025 call the midwife season 14 tv hero 2

PBS may not be able to boast a lineup of original shows like Netflix and the other streamers, but it's been America's gateway for British dramas for decades. Granted, some of these shows will show up on the streamers as well. The key difference is that PBS won't charge you to watch them, and you can even stream them online if you don't want to support your local station.

This month's picks include two returning British dramas, one of which had almost a full decade between seasons. Our other pick is a returning murder mystery show from Sweden, which proves just how universally popular that genre has turned out to be.
