Former Doctor Who tapped for Thor 2 villain role

As production ramps up on Marvel Studios’ Thor 2, we’re finally getting some solid information about the sequel. Actually, scratch that. Did we say “solid?” We meant “super awesome.”

According to Deadline, Christopher Eccleston (a man you all most likely know as the ninth incarnation of Doctor Who) has signed an agreement to play the antagonist opposite Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Marvel’s upcoming big screen sequel. The bad news? He isn’t playing the Doctor. Instead, Eccleston will assume the role of Malekith The Accursed.

“Who?” you all just shouted at your monitors in bizarre synchronous unison. Good question! Let’s look Mr. Accursed up in our handy Marvel Wiki:

Malekith the Accursed ruled the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. Svartalfheim is one of the nine worlds of Asgard. Malekith mastered sorcery, making him a formidable ally to the other enemies of Asgard. He formed an alliance with the god of mischief Loki on behalf of Surtur. Not long after that agreement, he used a special food provided to him by Hela. The food contained some sort of magic, which gave him control of the humans of Earth. While continuing his quest, he took the life of Eric Willis, guardian of the Casket of Ancient Winters. Before his death Willis conveyed the Casket’s location to Loki. Not willing to give up his quest, Malekith Kidnapped the Asgardian Lorelei in order to gain control of the god of Thunder. Thor discovered that he had been tricked into falling for a stack of wood, and became enraged as he learned that the real Lorelei was being held captive by Malekith. Lorelei was eventually freed but, Thor was forced to battle Algrim the Strong. Malekith attempted to destroy both combatants by plunging them into a pit of molten magma; subsequently Malekith retrieved the Casket of Ancient Winters, from the being known as Jagrfelm. Shortly after Jagrfelm’s death, Malekith released its power upon Asgard in his quest to rule all nine worlds.

Huh. Okay, interesting backstory. He seems to be something of a step down from Loki, especially given how excellent Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of the trickster god was in both the first Thor and in The Avengers. Still, we’ve got faith in Eccleston, so we’re anxious to see what he can do with the role.

At the same time however, we’re a bit worried that this might be a bit of stunt casting meant to appease geek audiences. There’s a sizable overlap between Doctor Who devotees and comic book readers, and it stands to reason that prospective fans of Thor 2 will be pleased to hear that a Doctor will feature heavily in the flick. That’s all well and good — and a rather canny business decision — but we’re concerned that the people behind this film might go a bit overboard with the idea. Thor versus the lord of the dark elves is a perfectly valid basis for a film’s plot, but not if the god of thunder is winking into the camera and shouting “EXTERMINATE” in droning monotone every time he takes a swing at Eccleston.

That said, we fully support the hypothetical possibility of a Billie Piper cameo. She’s adorable.
