Google releases EMIC, a short film influenced by Interstellar

Available for free on Google Play as of today, EMIC is a short documentary film that was specifically inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Created from utilizing thousands of video submissions from people all around the world, the film attempts to capture what the people of Earth believe to be important moments in history. Described on Google Play, the film “will serve as a time capsule that shows future generations what life on Earth was like, should we leave this planet.”

The title of the film, EMIC, is a word that means “analysis of cultural phenomena from the perspective of one who participates in the culture being studied” according to Merriam-Webster. The film features a variety of culturally significant submissions including photos, video, music, the spoken word and artwork. In other words, the film attempts to create a time capsule of knowledge meant to be passed onto future generations.

The timing of this release is tied to the release of the digital download of Interstellar. Released today, people interested in the film can purchase the movie in a digital format only. Two weeks from today, the film will be released on physical formats such as DVD and Blu-ray.

The film details the life of Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, who must leave his family behind to lead an expedition through a wormhole in space to discover a place for mankind to survive beyond Earth. Other popular actors and actresses in the film include Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow and Michael Caine.
