Jake Gyllenhaal goes behind enemy lines in first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant

Jake Gyllenhaal (Ambulance) is a soldier on a mission to repay a debt in the first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant.

Gyllenhaal stars as John Kinley, a U.S. Army Sergeant whose team is ambushed by the Taliban. Kinley is severely injured and about to die, but his group’s Afghan interpreter, Ahmed (Curveball’s Dar Salim), intervenes and saves the sergeant’s life. In the aftermath of the ambush, Ahmed goes into hiding from the Taliban as he and his family were not granted safe passage to America as previously promised. Indebted to Ahmed, Kinley fights his way back into the war zone to save Ahmed and his family before the Taliban reaches them.

Over the last few years, Gyllenhaal has gravitat toward action thrillers. The Academy Award nominee starred in Antoine Fuqua’s The Guilty and Michael Bay’s Ambulance, and will headline Doug Liman’s upcoming remake of Road House as Dalton. Gyllenhaal will also star in Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, based on the 1990 legal thriller starring Harrison Ford.

The Covenant’s ensemble includes Alexander Ludwig (Heels), Jason Wong (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Antony Starr (The Boys), Bobby Schofield (SAS Rogue Heroes), Christian Ochoa (Dynasty), and Emily Beecham (Cruella)

The Covenant is directed by Ritchie, who is best-known for his action ensemble films like Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, The Gentlemen, Wrath of Man, and many more. Ritchie co-wrote the film with frequent collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The trio co-wrote 2023’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

The Covenant heads to theaters on April 21.

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie's upcoming Arthurian saga has a new title, a new synopsis, and a new photo from the U.K. set of the film.

Now titled Knights of the Round Table, the project is expected to be the first of six films in a series that follows Arthur Pendragon's path to becoming the legendary King Arthur. The series is based on Thomas Mallory’s 1485 compilation of French and English stories about iconic character, Le Morte d’Arthur. Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam was cast as Arthur in the saga in 2014.

Where to watch Magic Mike’s Last Dance

In 2012, the world of male stripping took center stage in Magic Mike. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Magic Mike stars Channing Tatum as Mike Lane, an aspiring entrepreneur who works odd jobs as a handyman during the day. At night, Mike comes alive as a male stripper, wowing the club with his innate charm and attractive dance moves. With a budget of $7 million, Magic Mike became an instant hit, grossing over $167 million worldwide. The film spawned a 2015 sequel, Magic Mike XXL, which also became a box-office success, grossing $122 million against a $12 million budget.

To complete the trilogy, Tatum graced the stage as Mike Lane one final time in Magic Mike's Last Dance. Originally supposed to be released exclusively to streaming, Warner Bros. opted to give the third film a theatrical release in February 2023. While the film struggled in theaters (it only grossed $57 million), Magic Mike's Last Dance will now get the chance to find another audience on streaming.
