Unsolved Mysteries Volume 3 trailer heralds the show’s return to Netflix

The original Unsolved Mysteries series had a famous tagline in which the host, the late Robert Stack, would invite viewers to “join the search and perhaps you may be able to help solve a mystery.” That might be a tall order if you’re looking to find Bigfoot or trying to prove the existence of extraterrestrials, but it’s easy to forget that some of the cases featured on Unsolved Mysteries were all too real. For the families of the missing or the deceased, it’s no laughing matter. Later this month, Netflix is bringing back its Unsolved Mysteries revival series for nine new episodes, with a different mystery in each one.

Although Netflix tends to drop every episode of a season all at once, Unsolved Mysteries Vol. 3 is getting a timed release over three weeks. On October 18, the first three episodes will explore Mystery at Mile Marker 45, Something in the Sky, and Body in Bags. The second round of episodes will hit on October 25, with Death in a Vegas Motel, Paranormal Rangers,  and What Happened to Josh?

As you can probably infer from the episode titles, this year’s cases are once again a mixture of real-life mysteries and paranormal events that defy explanation. That trend continues in the third and final batch of episodes on November 1. Those stories are called Body in the Bay, The Ghost in Apartment 14, and Abducted by a Parent.

For us, what we would really like to know is why the trailer has such a creepy shot of a closet door closing on a stuffed Ernie toy from Sesame Street. We’re fairly certain that there are no evil dolls on this show, as the paranormal mysteries tend to be at least somewhat plausible. But we’ll find out for certain on October 18.

"When you hear the different things that happened with regards to Jeffrey Dahmer and his victims, Glenda was one of his victims, too, and her story has been told the least," said Nash in an interview with Netflix. "Heavy is the head that wears the crown to tell this story, specifically through Glenda's lens as it had never been done before. So that comes with a lot of responsibility because you want to make sure you get it right."

How does one even prepare to play one of the most notorious serial killers in American history? That's the challenge Evan Peters faced while playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Netflix's limited series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. In his preparation, Peters grappled with playing the two sides of Dahmer, who seemed like a normal person on the outside, but behind closed doors lived a homicidal monster. Peters knew what it would take to play Dahmer, which involved uncomfortable, but necessary levels of commitment.

"Honestly, I was very scared about all the things that he did. Diving into that and trying to commit to that was absolutely going to be one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life," said Peters in an interview with Netflix. "I wanted it to be very authentic, but in order to do that, I was gonna have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time."

The word "monster" is thrown around so often that it's lost a lot of its meaning. It's supposed to be a word that describes something horrific and evil beyond description. In the case of Jeffrey Dahmer, monster is the only word that is appropriate. Beneath the surface of his benign appearance lies the heart of a serial killer who preyed upon young men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Cannibalism, necrophilia, torture, murder, and sexual assault were just some of his crimes. Now, Netflix is offering a new exploration of this killer in the upcoming miniseries, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Evan Peters has played some pretty dark roles across his nine-season run on American Horror Story. But fans of that series may not be prepared for his chilling performance as Dahmer. In this trailer alone, Dahmer simply lacks the traits most people would associate with humanity. And he's absolutely terrifying when he tries to intimidate his neighbor, Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash), into eating a sandwich that is probably filled with human meat.
