While it lets you pull extra detail out of landscape shots when needed, Apple can still improve its low-light autofocus and detail-processing pipeline.

For most people who mainly shoot everyday photos and casual video, though, the base iPhone 17’s camera system covers the fundamentals extremely well while saving you hundreds of dollars upfront.

Best camera phones around $500

  • Google Pixel 10a ($499): The safest choice in this price bracket. Its 48MP main camera (f/1.7, 1/2-inch sensor) and 13MP ultrawide can’t match the Pro model’s hardware, but Google’s processing pipeline still delivers that same dependable, natural Pixel look, and you get the same seven years of software support as the flagship Pixel 10.
  • Nothing Phone (4a) Pro ($499): The surprise pick. It’s the first Nothing flagship reliably available in the US, and it packs a genuine 50MP, 3.5x optical periscope telephoto, a rarity at this price, alongside a 50MP Sony LYT-710 main sensor. It trades some low-light consistency for that extra zoom versatility.

To keep our listings transparent, we’ve relied on our hands-on shooting experience with the devices across daylight, low light, and everyday conditions. The Pixel 11 Pro XL and the Pixel 11 are the only two exceptions (since Google just launched them). We also considered DXOMark’s standardized testing, which scores exposure, color accuracy, autofocus, zoom, and video the same way across every brand.
