Think Tank thinks travel with the latest round of carry-on friendly bags

Think Tank Photo is clearly thinking air travel — the firm’s latest bags, the Airport Advantage rolling carry-on and the Airport Helipak for 3DR Solo drones, are designed for keeping gear safe (and photographers comfortable) from the airport to the shoot. The California-based company introduced both bags on Tuesday.

The concept behind the Airport Advantage is based on the idea that many small regional airplanes have smaller overhead bins, leaving photographers using the standard carry-on size to check their bag at the gate. Think Tank says the Airport Advantage is designed to fit inside those smaller overhead bins, while still holding the maximum amount of gear.

Despite conforming to more realistic carry-on dimensions, the bag can still hold a DSLR, with or without a battery grip, and with a lens attached, plus three to four additional lenses and a 15-inch laptop sleeve. A tripod mount and water bottle pocket expands the storage options to the side.

While the Airport Helipak still conforms to carry-on standards, the 3DR Solo bag is worn as a backpack. The bag is roomy enough for a 3DR Solo drone, 15-inch laptop, controller, multiple GoPros, a charger, spare rotors, extra batteries, and more.

The interior dividers are custom set to the dimensions of the 3DR Solo, yet still give drone pilots customization options for accommodating accessories. Think Tank opted to use a ballistic nylon for a durable exterior, while a padded waist belt and height-adjustable sternum strap helps keep the weight of that gear bearable on longer treks.

Both bags are available now, with the Helipak retailing for $200 and the rolling carry-on for $250.

Phone cameras are so good, they’ve finally replaced my camera for work
Close up of the camera on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro.

For almost two decades, I’ve carried more than twenty pounds of electronics in my backpack for the slightest chance of needing to capture content for my professional life. My backpack usually contained my MacBook, a full-frame camera with a big lens, a tripod, and an assortment of video and audio gear that I always deemed essential.

As it turns out, over the past two years, many of these items were rendered obsolete, as many companies launched new products that were quickly able to replace technology that I previously considered irreplaceable.
