Amazon’s same-day delivery service launches in Canada

If you’re Toronto or Vancouver-based and always find that waiting more than a day for your Amazon package to arrive has you biting your nails to the quick, then sit yourself down, take a deep breath, and listen up: You can now receive your item on the very same day you order it.

But before you vacate this page to embark on a frenzied wallet-draining shopping spree over at Amazon.ca, be aware that you’ll have to pay for the privilege. That’s right, to have your order delivered to a Toronto or Vancouver address in super-fast time, you’ll have to cough up CDN$11.99 per shipment, plus another CDN$1.99 per item contained in that shipment. Of course, Prime members will pay considerably less – CDN$6.99 to be exact, with no extra per-item fee to think about.

Also, to guarantee that your same-day delivery does in fact take place on the day you order it (otherwise we can’t really call it ‘same-day delivery’ can we), you’ll need to hit the Amazon checkout before midday, which theoretically should culminate in a knock at the door by 9pm, though hopefully a lot earlier, right?

Amazon says the service is good for “more than one million” items on its website, including things like movies, games, electronics, food, household necessities, and travel-related stuff.

If there’s a decent demand for the new service, we can expect to see Amazon roll it out to other cities north of the border as the e-commerce giant continues with efforts to enhance its delivery service for Amazon shoppers around the world.

“We’re constantly working to speed up delivery times and introduce new services that make our customers’ lives easier,” Alexandre Gagnon, country manager for Amazon.ca, said in a release. “With same-day delivery, customers in Toronto and Vancouver can conveniently take care of errands or complete holiday shopping in a day with just a few clicks, receive orders seven days a week and have what they need delivered to their home in a matter of hours.”

The Canada launch comes several months after Amazon expanded same-day deliveries to more locations in the US – including New York City, Dallas – bringing the total number of US cities offering the service to 12.
