Xoom 2 tablets coming to Verizon as ‘Droid Xyboard’ in December

Verizon has confirmed to CNet that it plans to release two new Motorola tablets this month. Dubbed the Xoom 2 in international markets, the tablets — one 10-inch version, and one 8-inch model — will each be renamed “Droid Xyboard,” the Droid brand being Verizon’s high-end line of mobile devices.

The Droid Xyboard tablets will connect to Verizon’s 4G LTE network, the fastest wireless connection in the US, at the moment. Besides that, the company has remained mum on most details, like pricing and an exact launch date, though it’s rumored that the devices will launch next week, on December 8.

“As we’ve previously mentioned, we’re planning to bring several new LTE devices to market including two tablets,” said Verizon in a statement. “We haven’t made any official announcements in the U.S. but we look forward to sharing more details soon.”

We do know that the devices are both thinner and lighter than the original Xoom, which any owner knows is a bit cumbersome due to its hefty weight. Both tablets also pack a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for video chats — neither of which are likely to impress, as Motorola generally has some of the worst cameras available in mobile devices. One area to get excited about, however, may be its new sound system, which sports 2.1 virtual surround sound and a subwoofer.

The tablets will run Google’s tablet-centric Android Honeycomb operating system.

The tablet market, while still firmly dominated by Apple’s iPad line, has begun to see a rise in popularity of other brands’ tablets. Most of those, like Amazon’s Kindle Fire, are low-end devices, that cost far less than an iPad 2. Verizon’s current LTE Xoom offering costs $499, with the signing of a new two-year contract.

Update 12-5-2011 Jeffrey Van Camp: Today, Verizon officially included these two tablets in a press release, confirming that they are bound for December. No additional information is yet known.

Apple Watch SE 2 and a ‘rugged’ Apple Watch coming in 2022, latest report says

The Apple Watch Series 7 was a modest update when compared to Series 6. It featured the same processor, features, and design as the previous variant, though our reviewer, Andy Boxall, was a huge fan regardless, giving it five stars for the refinements it made. However, Apple seems to be making more significant changes for next year's model, adding two new smartwatches to its wearable lineup in 2022. According to the latest report, the company could announce a "rugged" Apple Watch and Watch SE 2 alongside the Series 8 next year.

The latest development comes from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who revealed that an Apple Watch with a rugged design aimed at sports athletes is coming in 2022. Additionally, Apple is planning to update the Watch SE, which makes sense, since it didn't get an update this year. To recall, the first-generation Apple Watch SE was released in September 2020. It still serves as the best smartwatch to get if you are looking to get into Apple's wearable segment for around $250.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 is coming with 5G and NFC
microsoft surface duo review modes tent 2

Microsoft is holding a Surface event on Wednesday, September 22 that's expected to see the launch of a wide range of new devices. Alongside the Surface Pro 8, Surface Book 4, and other traditional Surface-branded products, the company is reportedly preparing a sequel to its first Android phone, the Surface Duo. A new set of FCC documents spotted by Windows Central confirm the addition of two missing features from the original Duo, 5G, and NFC. The documents also hint at the addition of wireless charging support and ultra-wideband for tracking accessories and enabling scenarios like Nearby Share.

Like with other FCC documents for pre-release products, the details are scarce. It's not clear if the Duo 2 will support Qi charging, for example. However, Windows Central speculates that the Duo could support some form of reverse wireless charging for the Surface Pen, noting that the Qi wireless charging coil could be too big to fit into a device like the Duo without running into hearing issues or increasing the thickness unreasonably.
